Guess what Caribbean 'creature' is being described here: The soldier, so called from having the fore part armed with a shell like a lobster; the hinder part being naked, which he hides in other fishes' shells, and as he grows in bigness, shifts his cover.

I've become such a Prince Rupert fangirl that I totally get that when Basil Lubbock was writing a biography about him (never published!!!), he chose to title his first chapter: "The Man", because Rupert really was the man.

Imagine receiving a personalised love-anagram. 'Oh I'me all mercy' From a BL volume that contained very juicy letters alongside the dry naval correspondence I was powering through.

Also, a prime example of female entrepreneurship, in my opinion, is Louise Renée de Kérouaille, who became one of King Charles II's mistresses. In 1681, she extracted £132,000 from the Treasury for her 'Secret Services'. A hussler if you ask me. (1/2)

On the subject of Women & Entrepreneurship, the woman of the week is Peggy Jones. A notorious mudlarker who was immortalised in this print. She utilised her knowledge of the river and its tides to scrape a living together. In her special skirt, she gathered valuables and coal, which she sold. (1/2)

Eight weeks ago, I jokingly imagined a podcast where scholars could (expertly) hate on historical figures. Almost 100,000 people thought it was a good idea. I am so incredibly excited to announce that the first episodes of my brand new show This Guy Sucked will be released March 20th!
A podcast cover featuring Franz Halz' 'Portrait of a Bearded Man with a Ruff,' his face covered with a turquoise scribble and handwritten yellow script reading 'This Guy Sucked'

Perhaps a good statement to debate in a BA3 or MA course on the trans-Atlantic slave trade and its origins.

Camilla de Koning @camilladekoning.bsky.social · 22/01/2025
Personally what irks me is how a statement like this goes hand in hand with regarding the role of any royal family in the establishment of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. As if to already pave the way: if someone does argue active royal involvement, it was Africa's fault first?

A reminder of how far historians have come in the last 50 years, while also showing how much work there still is to do. This specific work is the only one that even touched upon the connection between slave trade and this English royal family member. But since then, it has not been revisited.

Digging through works on monarchy, empire and slave trade, never ceases to baffle me. First, a general excusing of Royal involvement is the standard. Second, phrases like this, which concluded a paragraph on the TSAT published in 1976: "All were victims in the first place of their fellow-Africans."
