Guess what Caribbean 'creature' is being described here: The soldier, so called from having the fore part armed with a shell like a lobster; the hinder part being naked, which he hides in other fishes' shells, and as he grows in bigness, shifts his cover.

I've become such a Prince Rupert fangirl that I totally get that when Basil Lubbock was writing a biography about him (never published!!!), he chose to title his first chapter: "The Man", because Rupert really was the man.

Also, a prime example of female entrepreneurship, in my opinion, is Louise Renée de Kérouaille, who became one of King Charles II's mistresses. In 1681, she extracted £132,000 from the Treasury for her 'Secret Services'. A hussler if you ask me. (1/2)

Digging through works on monarchy, empire and slave trade, never ceases to baffle me. First, a general excusing of Royal involvement is the standard. Second, phrases like this, which concluded a paragraph on the TSAT published in 1976: "All were victims in the first place of their fellow-Africans."

'Found' this, unknown to me, beautiful and interesting painting, by Jurriaen van Streeck, presumably from the 1670s. Described as a still life, but in many ways a portrait. Van Streeck lived and died in Amsterdam. Was this young man part of the established Afro-Dutch community in Amsterdam?

This painting was made 123 years after Edward Colston died. In the foreground, a woman called Mary (or Black Mary in his testament), kneels. Why did the painter R.J. Lewis choose to include her? What is the painting we can spot in the background? Questions from some research I'm working on.

Gem of the archives. Letters annotated with a summary of the response. Thank you, dear sirs. I especially love that the two sets of handwriting almost seem to come from a different century. Both men complained about the quality of the sugar coming off of the plantation L'Esperance in Suriname.

Starting out with the best book I've read this year: The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois by Prof. Honorée Fanonne Jeffers. Amazing family history, it's fiction, but wonderfully researched, showing the complexity and effects of slavery on (family) life. Must read!
