Wait, is it #PortfolioDay already? 💀 I'm Camila, concept artist and illustrator working in games and books. I love SFF and a touch of horror! My character work tends to get most attention, but I like variety and at heart I'm a bit of a generalist. 🖼️ cara.app/camilabrun 📨 info/@/camilabrun.com

Digital painting of a creature made of arms barging down a dark corridor. It's dark, with skin ridged like bark yet but smooth like obsidian, and embers rise from it. The hands don't look quite human, with weird joints and sharp tendons and knuckles. Its lower half is still forming, and there's an overturned brazier behind it spilling incandescent coal on the floor. It's holding most of its hands in menacing claw-like positions, with arms intertwined in the center forming the bulk of its body. It stands taller than a person, but isn't large enough to fully block the passage.

The corridor is flanked by tall windows in art deco style, with a gentle breeze blowing the translucent curtains. There are ornamental plants and wood benches by the windows. Some of the window panels are broken, and there are glass shards on the benches and floor. There's also dust spiraling in the air. The corridor doesn't seem well-kept, but hasn't been abandoned for long.

This artwork was made on Krita, with help of Blender mainly for lighting reference and the background.

An Indigenous woman emerging from a body of water. Only the top of her head down to the nose are visible. There's a dark forest behind her, and she's staring directly at the viewer with fixed intensity that suggests she might not be friendly. She's surrounded by stylized aquatic plants including Amazon's vitória-régias, a type of water lily. Insects are buzzing around and the reflection of the sky can be seen on the water. The scene's colors are very saturated, but somewhat dark and ominous.

She's Iara. Her legend is a mess, an attempt by colonizers to make sense of older Tupi and Guarani myths. In it she's the daughter of the Pajé, the spiritual leader of her people, and was known for her beauty and fighting prowess, respected by her father, beloved by all.

One night her brothers, deeply envious of her, set up an ambush. She fought back and accidentally killed them in the ensuing scuffle. Severely wounded and afraid of her father's punishment, Iara fled to the margins of the Negro and Solimões rivers (which feed the great Amazon river), but was found and thrown into it, drowning. The fishes took pity on her, and under the full moon they turned her into a mermaid.

Then the once fearsome warrior... apparently decided to sit on a rock, brush her hair and sing (and lure and drown men) like European sirens, hah.

Sketchbook pages from 01-2024. It's from before I started using a color pencil for darker blacks or mixing acrylic paint, so it's a bit faded.

Photo of an open sketchbook with pencil sketches. It has studies of portraits of people mostly from early 1900s.

Page 1:
1. A girl with curly hair tied with a large bow looking to the side and smiling.
2. A dark-haired man with a moustache and a goatee(?) looking to the side.
3. A woman with a wavy bob cut smiling, with her mouth slight open as if she were talking at the time.

Page 2:
1. A young man wearing a cap and what seems to be a porter uniform. He has a serious expression.
2. A man with a pointy moustache, wearing a hat.

Another week, another portrait! This one is from November, with the "fun" fact it's actually repainted from an early 2024 thumbnail. I'm always low on storage and got a new HD last year that nuked itself one month in, as soon as I temporary moved some archived stuff to it to make room. 🥲

3/3 - Find or create a comfy matcap. This is the one I use, I like neutral colors and anisotropy to see planes better. Free download: ko-fi.com/s/522fa55057 The video I mentioned: www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4Wt... And proko's channels seem good, but no idea why he has so many.

A screen capture of blender's 3d interface with a sculpture, showing 3 different views of the same sculpture:
- A work view with a matcap
- A view slightly from the bottom, with material shading
- A second helper view using full shading and light

Ack, I keep forgetting to post artwork! Hue practice from the end of last year. Gray shifts suit this skin tone exceptionally well.

Portrait painting of a girl in 3/4, looking off-canvas with a slight frown.

She's got a ponytail with a hint of her natural texture and dark skin of a rich cool tone with grays, purples and a touch of gold snuck into the hues.

By April I settled in using a black color pencil with a slightly damp tip for deeper blacks and a acrylic paint mixed to the exact shade of the paper, but lighter, for highlights.

Close-up of sketch 1, page 1, (elegant's woman mugshot). She was so pretty! I'm very happy with the blend of paint and hatching in this one.

A close-up photo of the portrait 2, page 2, (young possibly Latin-descendant woman with white bow) taken from a steep side angle to keep the acrylic paint highlights from looking grey in this lighting.

Close-up photo from portrait 4, page 1, (the Japanese envoy) because I loved his expression and want to show how I'm working the paint into the sketches.

Oct 2024 art. I used the itch to paint sparkly glossy critters to try out the transform tool and new brushes in Krita. I didn't plan to make an entire art poster (though my wall thanks me) and initially had a fish doing a flip in the middle. It looked like everyone was shocked he was dead. 😂

A digital painting of several fishes against a light background. The seem to be converging on the center in either a convo or a secret fight club. An impasto-like technique was employed for the background, inspired by the works of J. C. Leyendecker.

1. A small silvery fish, no species in particular.
2. Small Silver Forage. It's silvery and long.
3. Silver Carp Fish. It's dark greenish on the top, with a cream belly and punk highlights on the head and fins.
4. Female Betta fish. It's hue shifts from dark purple to green-blue.
5. Neon fish. It's tiny, long, translucent with electric blue and red stripes.
6. Red Tail Shark. It's small, dark with a bright orange tailm a bit elongated and has the whiskers of a catfish.
7. Japanese eel. It's dark and sinuous and glossy.
8. Mono Fish. Round but not exactly thin, spadefish-shaped, small and very cute, cream color with bright yellow fins.
9. Zebra Pleco. Shaped like a catfish, but with diagonal black stripes on a white body.
10. Java Barb. It's flat and round, but with pointy orange fins. Silvery with a pink undertone.
11. Male Betta fish. It's red with the vaguest hints of blue in the edges of its veil-like fins.
12. Barramundi. Stocky fish, dark on the top with a cream, slightly orangeish belly. This one bright has blue highlights because I liked the effect how the reflections in a photo looked like a pattern.
13. Mackerel. It's light blue with darker blue stripes, more on the green side than red on the color wheel. It's belly is cream/silvery.
14. Longfin Batfish. Blue with yellow fins and a two subtle darker stripes on the head.
15. Arowana. It's large with larger scales of a dark color with a lighter rim. It has catfish whiskers.

Second nose study! Like the first one the second didn't have a specific reference, I just kept various faces in mind mixed what I *think* I know about anatomy. #b3d

Overlapping views of digital sculpture of an East Asian woman seen from 4 different angles. It's strongly lit from above, with a soft, eerie light from below, and looks like gently aged plaster. Her features are fuzzy, her nose her most sharply-defined trait.

Close up. I wanted to know whether detailing the beard with a rake brush would work and yes, it may not be noticeable in the full picture but I like the result. I forgot to mention it's all painted in #Krita.

I though it'd be funny to paint a guy with a vaguely modern hairstyle in fantasy-ish clothing, but when I was stuck painting fur it no longer seemed that clever. 😅

Digital painting. Portrait of a stylized, long faced man with pronounced ears, brown hair styled in a 1930s inspired toupee fashion, but longer like 2010s+ sytles. He's wearing a rough-looking leather coat lined with fur. There's snow on his clothes and hair.

I experimented with new approaches to references usage this weekend because it always looks so boring and stiff, and accidentally discovered I really like ballpoint pen style sketching, which is funny because I'm scared of traditional pens. 12 first figures out of 100. Can't wait to sketch more!

12 digital sketches of people. Except the first, they are filled in pink shading looking like quick markers lines denoting volume, and outlined in a thin ballpoint-like black brush.

01. A woman seen from behind, one raised arm the other on a wall, doing a 4 shape with her legs. The shading is solid here, and she was sketched using a pencil brush.

02. A shirtless man holding a large bottle in a hand, the opposite foot resting on a football (the round variety).

03. A man with a toupee looking to the side, walking as he adjusts his jacket.

04. A woman stretching, arms up, one foot flat on the ground, the other to the side with only toes touching it.

05. A woman mid-run or jumping. Her body language is taunt and determined.

06. A man standing and looking to the side. His arms are resting relaxed to the sides, with closed fists. He's wearing a zipped-up jacket, pants, ankle boots and has a bag.

07. A woman in sportswear resting her elbows and back against a railing. She's relaxed and smiling.

08. A man seen from behind playing golf, mid-swing. His left foot is twisted in an awkward angle.

09. A stylish woman peering at the viewer. She has long curly hair and is wearing shades, cargo pants, sneakers and a jacket over her shoulders.

10. Woman from 07, now leaning slightly forward, looking at the ground with a smile.

11. A woman with long curly hair sitting on a rock. She's wearing a leotard and posing for the camera.

12. A woman in a bikini holding a surfboard upright.

I wonder how well bsky deals with gifs? The timelapse from the study above, I tried to start from a vague skull to improve my grasp of tissues depth because when drawing I structure heads around the skull, not circles and lines.

Nose study sculpture from 2022. Sculpting is not only a great way to improve anatomy, it's incredibly fun. Last year I started playing with real clay, doing more body parts studies from imagination and life and pinning them to a wall. 😂 #b3d

I can't believe I didn't think of posting a page with a snake, given the year and everything. This year is ours, fellow serpents.

Close up of page 2, 6) A mature man with a white dog on his lap. He's frowning at the sun, wearing a conical cap to protect his eyes, and is overweight, with full lips and a round face.

Close up of page 1, 5) A beautiful black headed python (Aspidites melanocephalus).

It's from 2020 and I know it's sloppy but I still like it! I wanted a nice cover for a thing I'm picking up again to work on this year. #ProjectMachina #GameDev #ConceptArt

Surrealist horror monochrome sketch of a man in a heavy military style coat holding a rifle. His eye glows ominously. He's vertically split open in half, one side of his body facing left, the other in 3/4.

There's no gore, instead there's a winding maze-like material in place of where it'd be the insides of his body and head similar to mitochondria. A few spots deep inside the gaps of the "maze" glow red/pink.

The illustration was created for an ongoing personal gamedev project, brainstorming what sort of cosmic horror enemies would be.

This one sat in my WIP folder for so long it was started on PS and finished on Krita. 😄 Iara is a character from local folklore. Her myth is in the alt.

Illustration of an Indigenous woman emerging from a body of water.

She's Iara, a character from Brazilian folklore.

Oh hey, it's another week already, so here's one of my favorite sketchbook pages! It's from July, 2023. They're all real people. I always write their names and dates at the side when known, and the context in the alt text. #TraditionalArt #Sketchbook #Pencils

An open sketchbook with sketches in graphite, black pencil for deep shadows and off-white acrylic for highlights.

Page one: 1) A bufflehead duck (Bucephala albeola). 2) A Bedoiun man from 1890s. He's wearing a white keffiyeh (a traditional headdress worn in parts of Middle East), contrasting with his medium-brown skin tone and saltpepper, almost white beard. 3) A Black woman in her 20s from 1890s. She's in 3/4, away from the camera and looking to her side. She's wearing a white dress with a black collar. Gold acrylic paint was used to depict a small brooch on it. 4) A man in his 20 or 30s from 1890s. He's wearing a dark wide-brimmed hat, and his skin reflects a lot of light although it's on the lighter side.

Page two: 1) A cheetah (Acionyx jubatus). It looks somewhat sad. 2) A young Algerian woman from 1960. She's staring intensely at the photographer in defiance and anger. She's one of the villagers relocated to concentration camps by the French during the Algerian War (1954-1962), and had her photo taken for identification against her will. Her necklaces have been painted in gold acrylic. 3) A young member of the retinue of Empress Tu Cung from Vietnam, pictured in 1935 holding what seems to be a very tall parasol-type protection. 4) Alexandre Dumas fils, author of La Dame aux Camélias, son of Dumas of The Musketeers' fame. This portrait was drawn from a bust of him from 1873. He's got a moustache, wild curly to heavily textured hair, and a serious, skeptical expression.

Some time ago I played a Fallout ttrpg, and as it happens with every game ever, I cannot play them before painting them. 🫠 #Illustration #CharacterArt #Fallout #TTRPG

Digital painting of a Fallout (game franchise) original character. She has her hair up in a bun and a frazzled look, eyes dead locked into the viewer's. There are some scratches and a little blood on her face.

Her skin is moderately dark, reflecting a strong side light source, and she looks Central Asian or from the Arctic people's, with a rounder face, a delicate jaw and low cheekbones, which are flushed with a dark pink.

The painting style is a bit impressionist at times, with evident brush strokes and sharp edges.
