This is the deepest crisis of Western democracy since the Nazi era. Growing up in Nuremberg, I have learned that being anti-fascist is my first civic duty. There can’t be a question which side I’m on, as a human and an economist. As a student of FDR, I say: “I welcome their hatred.”

California's wealth tax isn’t perfect - but it’s a damn good start. Californians will be voting on a measure to implement a one time tax on wealth in excess of a billion at 5%.  @deanbaker13.bsky.social  wants more to be done, but this is one step to that. Read:

Voters will soon decide whether to tax billionaires to pay for essential services. Do the arguments against this wealth tax add up?

The central focus of analysis for Marx is the shop floor; for Adam Smith, it is the marketplace; and for MMT, it is monetary sovereignty—analyzing the federal government as a currency issuer rather than a household constrained by tax revenue.

A reason I like writing novels is that it's fun to figure out the telling. And that's part of the novel's specific structure & form it operates by that's unique to that novel. What does this story in particular need to be told? What architecture needs to shape it so it can be propelled? Love that.

My process of writing novels involves research because that’s really fun for me as how I’m engaging different parts of my brain in creating something. My first manuscript was written on a research grant to Morocco to write it. Every novel manuscript I’ve written since took research.
