A1 over this past weekend in Yosemite it felt like fall. The colorful leaves along the trail and cold weather, hail and snow flurries while packing up camp 🏕 It was a pleasant change from the long heat of winter #parkchat

Q9 #ParkChat Longer, cooler nights bring on the urge to eat and sleep more. Call it what you will – brumation, torpor, hibernation – many animals enter a state of sleep or near-sleep starting in the #autumn. What’s your favorite sleepy animal?

The most amazing stop for turtles in the road -- last October (2025), we moved TWO box turtles from the road to the side they were going. One male, one female. It was close to brumation time.

Q8 #ParkChat Some of those notable #autumn scents are due to the decay of fallen leaves and other organic matter. Fungi are nature’s recycling centers, and abound in autumn. What kinds of interesting fungi have you found in your autumn wanderings? (Of note: many fungi fluoresce in UV light!)

Don't eat this mushroom that popped up near Dunker Church on the Antietam Battlefield. It is poisonous and will make you very sick.

Q6 #ParkChat Most people equate flowers with springtime, but many flowers are #autumn bloomers, giving bees and other insects a last chance at storing up energy to get through winter. What are some of your favorite autumn blooming flowers?

Blue mistflower is like the autumn equivalent to the Virginia bluebells with it's striking color.

Boneset is something I've grown to love, as it is food for so many organisms that rely on late-blooming flowers.

Hoosier Bear checking out blueberries at Voyageurs National Park. Wild blueberries were an important part of Indigenous diets, helping to mitigate toxins found in the walleye and other fish.

Q4 #ParkChat A lot of tents are marketed as “three season” tents, supposed to be good for Spring, Summer and #Autumn. Have you camped in autumn? What kind of gear did you have?

We currently have an REI Half-Dome 2+ for road trips and many local camping trips. With a Teton 0F double sleeping bag (the "snuggle bag") and Kilos Gear air pads, we sleep well and stay warm.

During the OG Groinia (2020), we were in Rhinowolf tents with Klymit air pads and the Rhinowolf proprietary down "tops." NOT. WARM. ENOUGH.

Since 2020, an annual late October camping trip to Fifteenmile Creek has been a thing. Called "Groinia," it features amazing autumn colors along the C&O Canal, sometimes good fishing, and always good stories... like lighter fluid shots!

Gorgeous. I aspire to that kind of daily drive. I do get to drive through DC at night generally once a week, and while it's cool to see the Capitol Building all lit up at night, the current political climate makes it less awe-inspiring than it could be. #ParkChat
