Russian money supply (M2) has been consistently increasing at rates elevated from the pre-2022 invasion. Inflation happens when the money supply increases faster than the production of goods and services. Russia had inflation above 4% prior to 2022, so the change in slope = high inflation.

There is also the option to plot individual bond yields as a function of time. The 1-year bond is the academic favorite for measuring expected inflation over the following year (by adding ~1/2 to 1 point to the 1-year yield).

Here are the Russian zero coupon bond yield curves for today (01.10.2026) and one month ago. The 1-year yield is essentially unchanged -- the Russian bond market expectation of inflation over the next year remains ~14%-ish. The increase for the longer bonds indicates increased default risk (?).

Russia started this war on 20.02.2014. My source for that date: V. V. Putin. Ukraine was a lightly-armed non-aligned nation not seeking to join NATO or any other alliance at the time. Hence the rush of other non-aligned nations to join NATO. Russia is the only recruiter NATO has ever had.
