(ANNews) – More than 100 people gathered outside the Legislative Assembly building in Edmonton on Oct. 4 to protest the provincial and federal governments’ permissive approach toward building AI data centres. Who can vote in Alberta’s referendum? What students need to know before Oct. 19
As Alberta prepares for its referendum later this month, students attending post-secondary institutions across the province may be eligible to vote, even if they are originally from elsewhere in Canada.  To cast a ballot, voters must be Canadian citizens, at least 18 years old and ordinary residents of Alberta. Non-citizens, including international students, cannot vote. Lori Williams, associate professor of policy studies at Mount Royal University, says Elections Alberta describes ordinary residence as where a person currently lives or plans to return.

Danielle Smith brushes off NDP voter list court battle, says legislation coming
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith on Wednesday brushed off a court battle launched by the Opposition NDP over her government's changes to voter list rules. Smith told reporters in Edmonton that the new restrictions were called for by elections officials earlier this year after a major data breach involving a separatist group and the pro-Independence Republican Party of Alberta. "That's what we've done," Smith said at an unrelated news conference.

Conservative motion seeking more diesel relief defeated in House of Commons
The Conservative party's proposal to extend federal relief on diesel fuel was voted down in the House of Commons today. Global prices for diesel and gasoline have spiked since the spring as the war in Iran has disrupted fuel shipments from the Gulf region. The Liberal government already has extended an earlier pause on the federal fuel excise tax, which includes diesel, into 2027, but the Conservatives want to see the government go further.

New details in extensive FBI account of Tumbler Ridge, B.C., mass shooting
A complaint by the FBI against James Bryant in U.S. district court provides extensive new allegations about the mass killings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., where eight victims died on Feb. 10, 2026. FBI special agent Joseph Rico swears in the complaint that Bryant, who lives in Bellingham, Wash., met shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar online about three years ago. But they fell out of contact while the killer was institutionalized after setting her room on fire.

From rabbits and goats to piglets, Mount Royal University students lined up to get a few minutes with farm animals on Wednesday afternoon. The university's Healthy Campus Team brought the farm animals to campus to reduce stress.m The appeal goes beyond cuteness. A 2019 study found that just ten minutes of hands-on interaction with animals significantly reduced students' cortisol, a key stress hormone.

Don’t mistake attendance at a press conference as support for a pipeline, chief says
The grand chief of Treaty 8 First Nations stood behind Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith last week as they announced the Pacific Link pipeline was the first project deemed to be in the "national interest" under the Building Canada Act. But Trevor Mercredi said his presence shouldn't be taken as a vote of confidence. "I want to be clear that our presence should not be interpreted as support for the project," Mercredi told The Canadian Press.

Calgary Public Library helps referendum voters sort online fact from fiction
Calgary Public Library is trying to help voters navigate a confusing information environment as Albertans prepare to vote on ten referendum questions this month. The library is creating online resources and hosting public events aimed at helping people understand the ballot questions, while also providing tools to identify misinformation and disinformation. Sofia Batinic, the library’s lead of events and partnerships, said the programming grew out of conversations they were already having with people in the community, including newcomers looking for information about the referendum.

In April, the Mount Royal Faculty Association (MRFA) voted overwhelmingly (72 per cent) to shift MRU’s reading week to November.

Angel Houle says she's never voted in an Alberta provincial election, but this month's referendum is different. Not only is she casting a ballot, Houle is helping outfit First Nations' leaders with everything they need to get out the vote on Oct. 19. Mount Royal University has converted its main multi-faith room into a neutral, reservable space for different faiths. But the move has upset some Muslim students on campus who say the changes make them less willing to use the space. MRU's Wellness Services, which now runs the space, converted W201 into a Wellness and Meditation Space, available for multi-faith use. Under the new model, the room can be configured for different faith communities and scheduled bookings.

Experts eye Alberta referendum as case study on impacts of artificial intelligence
On any given day, says Aengus Bridgman, if you ask a popular artificial intelligence chatbot and a search engine whether taxes in an independent Albertawould be higher, it might say yes. A few hours later, it could be no. Responses from Google AI Overview and OpenAI's ChatGPT can change, because data used to predict responses is always changing. "(It’s) not because any of the underlying reality has changed," said Bridgman, director of Media Ecosystem Observatory.

Alberta University students push back on proposed tuition fee changes
A proposed new tuition framework for Alberta’s post-secondary students, obtained by the University of Calgary's student newspaper earlier this week, has university students worried about a potentially hefty fee hike that could make a university education even less affordable. According to documents uncovered by The Gauntlet, the funding model for post-secondary students could change next year. The proposed tuition changes follow the 2025 “Expert Panel on Post-Secondary Institution Funding and Alberta’s Competitiveness,” which released a report on funding frameworks for post-secondary institutions.

Indigenous communities along the newly announced West Coast Oil Pipeline route were given just two months for consultations, and that was still more than the government initially planned. The consultations were to only take place over one month but were extended to two after Indigenous leaders raised concerns about the tight timeline. A summary of those consultations says Indigenous groups decried the lack of information about the project, which prevented them from fully assessing its impact.

Carney gives Alberta pipeline special interest designation, to be called Pacific Link
A pipeline to haul Alberta oil to tankers on the B.C. coast took a big step forward Thursday. Prime Minister Mark Carney, with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith at his side, announced the line—to be known as Pacific Link—is the first project to receive national interest designation under the Building Canada Act. The designation doesn't mean the line is a done deal, but it streamlines and simplifies rules, timelines and oversight to help make it a reality.

Last week, Canada issued a travel advisory urging 2SLGBTQIA+ travellers heading to Turkey to exercise extreme caution. The advisory followed raids earlier this month in which Turkish authorities targeted LGBTQ+ organizations across major cities, including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Mersin. The Turkish government branded the operation "My Family is Safe." Human Rights Watch condemned the coordinated police raids, calling them "a direct threat to the rule of law and fundamental rights in Turkey."

Even double-time isn't always enough to get Calgary police officers to pick up another shift. After a busy summer, Deputy Chief Cliff O'Brien says the strain is showing up in unfilled overtime and call-out shifts. "It's pretty clear that our workforce is tired," O'Brien told the Calgary Police Commission last Wednesday. "It doesn't matter if they're getting paid double time or whatever it is, they're just...

Alberta minister says ‘human error’ saw detainees dropped off in Edmonton streets
Alberta's Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis says that when former prisoners were quietly released from custody in Edmonton's inner city recently, it came down to "human error." It comes after surveillance videos published by CBC earlier this month showed provincial corrections transport vans dropping off detainees in the city's Chinatown neighbourhood. The videos drew concern and calls for reform from local officials, community residents and business owners.

To understand the present, we must confront the past, say Calgary’s National Day of Truth and Reconciliation organizers
Once a year, the Calgary Public Library creates a safe space to uncover one of Canada's tragic histories that Indigenous people face across the country, but it’s also an opportunity to educate and build empathy for those affected by trauma, organizers say. Kelli Morning Bull, a member of the Piikani First Nation and Senior Service Designer for the Central Library, says their work around National Day of Truth and Reconciliation is to set the stage for people to learn about some of the trauma our communities face.

From a Little Box of Beads: How Chloe Buffalo Reclaimed Her Culture and Independence
Van Isle Bead Supply founder Chloe Buffalo is removing barriers that prevent Indigenous people from accessing their artistic heritage.  “That was my problem when I started beading,” she says, pointing to a box of high-quality dentalium on her table. “I feel like this is such an expensive box for one, right? I wanted to make it easy and accessible to as many people as possible.”

Premiers keeping cards close on constitutional changes pitched in Alberta referendum
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's counterparts across the country are keeping their cards close to their chest on where they stand on the major constitutional reforms Smith is sending to a provincewide vote next month. Smith's four proposals, three of which would likely require the support of seven legislatures representing over half of Canada's population (known as the 7/50 rule) and Parliament to implement, are among 10 questions she's putting to Albertans on Oct.

Eyes in the sky: Calgary police drone finds missing child in 30 seconds
Calgary police have a new tool to help in search and rescue. Police say its remotely piloted drones will help support its emergency response and public safety efforts. Launched in early September, the 90-day trial uses two drones in northeast and southeast Calgary to give officers an aerial look at some calls before patrol members arrive. Deputy Chief Cliff O’Brien reported on the pilot project's success at this week's Calgary Police Commission.

Teams of up to 16 people came together Thursday at McMahon Stadium to test their strength and raise money for Make-A-Wish Southern Alberta. Teams pulled heavy trucks to raise more than $ 300,000 to help grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. This year, five-year-old Caspian Primeau's wish to visit Walt Disney World with his family will come true after months of undergoing treatment for kidney cancer.

One shot or two? What to know about HPV vaccination recommendations
NEW YORK (AP) — Preteens may soon have something to celebrate: Medical experts are discussing the possibility that one dose of a life-saving cancer vaccine, instead of two, may be enough to protect them. U.S. vaccination recommendations have become splintered in the past year, with federal officials and doctors' organizations disagreeing over guidance and even battling each other in court. But both sides have been exploring revisions in longstanding HPV vaccine recommendations.

Alberta NDP files court challenge over province’s new restricted voter list rules
Alberta's Opposition NDP is challenging the legality of new government rules that severely restrict the amount of voter information elections officials can share with provincial political parties. In a court application filed Thursday in Edmonton, the NDP argue the new regulation undermines the purpose of having a voter list as laid out in provincial law. It's also arguing the changes are beyond what the government has the authority to do when issuing regulations through orders-in-council.
