Honouring the past while celebrating Indigenous resilience
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation aims to honour residential school survivors. At this year’s Werklund Centre event, Indigenous Elders and community members also highlight the culture and knowledge that continue to thrive despite that history. For the Elders Knowledge Circle Society, that work includes preserving traditional knowledge and making sure younger generations have opportunities to connect with it.

UCalgary students decry residential school denialism debate
University of Calgary students are calling on the school for answers after a controversial on-campus debate. Social media posts have surfaced from Sept. 29, when a national student-led organization set up a debate table in the Science Theatres area, posing the question of whether the residential school system should be considered a genocide. The organization, Canadian Students for Free Speech…

▷WATCH: Canadian astronaut takes off for six-month mission to International Space Station
Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk's first thought after being told Thursday he had made it to space was one of disbelief. "I don't really believe it yet," Kutryk said after being told the crew was in orbit, about 10 minutes after blasting off from Florida as part of the NASA SpaceX Crew 13 mission to the International Space Station. "It does feel weird, though."

Indigenous communities given just two months to consult on West Coast Pipeline
Indigenous communities along the newly announced West Coast Oil Pipeline route were given just two months for consultations, and that was still more than the government initially planned. The consultations were to only take place over one month but were extended to two after Indigenous leaders raised concerns about the tight timeline. A summary of those consultations says Indigenous groups decried the lack of information about the project, which prevented them from fully assessing its impact.

Carney gives Alberta pipeline special interest designation, to be called Pacific Link
A pipeline to haul Alberta oil to tankers on the B.C. coast took a big step forward Thursday. Prime Minister Mark Carney, with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith at his side, announced the line—to be known as Pacific Link—is the first project to receive national interest designation under the Building Canada Act. The designation doesn't mean the line is a done deal, but it streamlines and simplifies rules, timelines and oversight to help make it a reality.

Canadians mark sixth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Canadians across the country are marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Wednesday for the sixth consecutive year, honouring the survivors of residential schools and those who never made it home. Beginning in the 19th century, more than 150,000 Indigenous children were separated from their families and communities and sent to church-run residential schools where abuse, malnutrition and inadequate health care were rampant.

The report, an independent, peer review assessment by the Financial Action Task Force and the Asia-Pacific Group on Money Laundering, says Canada has developed "a mature and nuanced understanding" of money laundering and terrorist financing threats and vulnerabilities.

Advocates warn newcomers to Canada about Turkish crackdown on LGBTQ+
Last week, Canada issued a travel advisory urging 2SLGBTQIA+ travellers heading to Turkey to exercise extreme caution. The advisory followed raids earlier this month in which Turkish authorities targeted LGBTQ+ organizations across major cities, including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Mersin. The Turkish government branded the operation "My Family is Safe." Human Rights Watch condemned the coordinated police raids, calling them "a direct threat to the rule of law and fundamental rights in Turkey."

To understand the present, we must confront the past, say Calgary’s National Day of Truth and Reconciliation organizers
Once a year, the Calgary Public Library creates a safe space to uncover one of Canada's tragic histories that Indigenous people face across the country, but it’s also an opportunity to educate and build empathy for those affected by trauma, organizers say. Kelli Morning Bull, a member of the Piikani First Nation and Senior Service Designer for the Central Library, says their work around National Day of Truth and Reconciliation is to set the stage for people to learn about some of the trauma our communities face.

One shot or two? What to know about HPV vaccination recommendations
NEW YORK (AP) — Preteens may soon have something to celebrate: Medical experts are discussing the possibility that one dose of a life-saving cancer vaccine, instead of two, may be enough to protect them. U.S. vaccination recommendations have become splintered in the past year, with federal officials and doctors' organizations disagreeing over guidance and even battling each other in court. But both sides have been exploring revisions in longstanding HPV vaccine recommendations.

Alberta NDP files court challenge over province’s new restricted voter list rules
Alberta's Opposition NDP is challenging the legality of new government rules that severely restrict the amount of voter information elections officials can share with provincial political parties. In a court application filed Thursday in Edmonton, the NDP argue the new regulation undermines the purpose of having a voter list as laid out in provincial law. It's also arguing the changes are beyond what the government has the authority to do when issuing regulations through orders-in-council.

Alberta’s Smith rejects party accusation she’s muting pro-Canada referendum ads
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is rejecting a claim from her party president that her government is muting its pro-Canada messaging ahead of the separation vote. Smith says she hasn't been neutral and that her United Conservative Party government's $4-million ad campaign urges Alberta to remain a sovereign province within a united Canada. "I say the same thing to every audience," Smith told reporters Monday at a news conference in Airdrie, north of Calgary.

Alberta changes voter list rules, eyes new legislation after privacy breach
Alberta's government said Friday it has made temporary changes to rules governing provincial voter lists after a major privacy breach earlier this year. However, the move drew concern from the Opposition NDP, who said the government could be opening the door to voter fraud in next month's referendum. The province published a new policy Thursday that says copies of Alberta's official voter list given to political parties will only include the number of voters in each voting area and municipality.
