There should be consequences for lying to the public. Big Oil did it systematically for decades and they’re pushing for a “get out of jail free” card to avoid having to admit that in front of a jury.

The judicial system should apply to everyone and corporations shouldn’t get to opt out of it.

Big Oil’s obviously a beneficiary, but Big Tech stands as one of the biggest winners. These bills would strip everyday Americans of a vital tool for addressing the harms of data centers in their communities.

Phenomenal, important read here, and this is really the core of the climate/real estate problem: no one except the prospective homebuyer has any incentive to think beyond signing the closing papers. Insurance companies are largely free to drop you whenever they'd like. heated.world/p/the-open-h...

In this Golden Age for corporate impunity, the GOP is pushing state-level legislation that would strip people of the right to sue corporations — from oil companies to data center developers to chemical manufacturers. @drilledmedia.bsky.social drilled.media/news/new-zea...

The wind took an ember TWO AND A HALF MILES ACROSS A LAKE to ignite a new wildfire. Fire suppression is important to invest in but its powers are limited in the new fire-prone climate that Big Oil chose for us.

Western wildfires always turn into a circular debate about the degree to which we should blame climate change vs. "forest management" (ie, not logging enough). I would submit that you can't forest manage your way out of skipping an entire winter. www.opb.org/article/2026...

Decades of energy decisions were made under the assumption that methane leaks are negligible, making the climate impacts of "natural" gas look better than coal. Docs unearthed by @rebleber.bsky.social @rebeccajohn.bsky.social show Big Oil essentially wrote a key EPA report minimizing the problem.

A foundational Clinton-era EPA study downplaying the amount of methane that leaks from gas pipelines was functionally developed by the oil and gas industry. It's still used today to justify the claim that replacing coal with gas is a benefit to the climate. climateintegrity.org/uploads/medi...

Much more data needed and the insurance industry is for sure full of shitty, predatory behavior, but also there's not really a great way to paper over 25 $billion+ disasters in a year.

Middle East oil makes up a small (< 10% and declining) share of US oil consumption. Prices at the pump are skyrocketing because US oil producers feel entitled to maximize their profits exporting to the open market. That's a lot of things, but patriotic is not one of them.

I'm as anti-private utility as just about anyone, but it feels like we need a better way to deal with the growing costs of climate change than driving utilities into insolvency and making it more expensive for them to build the stuff we need them to build. subscriber.politicopro.com/article/eene...

Have they really not yet invented a word for the feeling when you’re physically enjoying warm, sunny weather but mentally really disturbed that it’s been pushing 60 degrees for weeks in the middle of January and the mountain snowpack is at microscopic levels?

Great read. It’s pretty shocking how quickly the (US) media has credulously bought into the idea that oil companies didn’t want this after the President literally said out loud that he was consulting with them before the invasion.

Take the time to read this first-of-its-kind collection of deceptive oil company advertisements over the past 25 years. US taxpayers are now spending a trillion dollars a year to recover from extreme weather disasters while these companies get a blank check to lie to people. They need to pay up.
