How it looks installed + a minor fuckup. (so many fuckups) Going to make some matching composite dust from scrap and mix it with epoxy to fill the small hole. Have another oopsy along the top from a circle saw kickback so nbd to fix both at once

Deck boards I'm using as fascia aren't perfectly straight. Neither is the rim joist. Clamps <3

This is a clamp appreciation post. This shit would be so much harder to do solo without them

Project was clearing out a group of Boxelder that were encroaching on the neighbors yard + made room for those Red Maples to get some sun--they were getting strangled by the faster growing box elder and they're a nicer tree imo. Looking forward to see how they develop

Taking a chip out of one side, and then cutting through horizontal on the other, helps it fall in the chip direction This tree was leaning heavily but I still got it to drop straight, and away from my fence Not a perfect science. Larger trees you'd use a wedge and a rope to guide it and be 100%

Definitely the most fun deck of the night. Some nice turn 4-5 kills in there. also had fun brewing with darklight pheonix! standard is fun right now

So, when we were in Romania my wife got her back patch signed by her favorite band, and was uncertain how to preserve it I messaged the local embroidery group and asked if anyone could make the sigs permanent. Snuck jacket out and back.

another clean 7-0. this is exactly what I want my unpowered decks to look like, lots of early interaction to slow down the opponent + ways to outgrind once they're slow twitch.tv/calebdmtg

Start of the day vs where I'm at now. Probably about halfway through installing the decking. Feels great to walk on it finally After it's in I'm going to snap a line and run a circle saw along the decking overhang. Makes more sense than cutting each board ahead of time

Rewatched the OG resident evil last night and was reminded of what an all-timer soundtrack it had. I think Freddy vs Jason gives it some competition for early 2000s metal Any others come to mind?

Passed! Now I need to install the decking, stairs, and railing. The railing needs to be accounted for with blocking before the decking goes on (so it has something to bolt into). But that's mostly done

Just gotta do the blocking for the top-down railing (using up some scraps from the project in the process), install some tension ties, and I'll be ready for the next round of inspections

Deck beams installed! Everything nice and level just like I knew it would be 😅 Tomorrow the joists go up. Going to be using a lot of screws to give my hammering arm a break. Glad I got a mix of screws/nails After that, inspection #2 and then the fun/tedious part of putting on the actual decking

This is probably the coolest card I found for a mono white cube. I'm picturing it in a tokens strategy. You play some spell or planeswalker to make some shitters, the opponent plays a big chonker, you slap this down and clean up

First off, love that the Shandalaar baddy got a card Letting him be your commander is fitting. He's the boss of all bosses. 5c makes sense The abilities are a little uninspired. Lotus makes sense, but overall they undersell the deep chaotic weirdness of this game/boss fight

Couple deck picks at diff angles cuz of glare. Grixis rean/sneak with some quality. Emissary's ploy on 1 for a few green cards is the only interesting thing. Hoping to t1 a birds off Library of Alexandria

One couple gave us a tour. They didn't speak English, but called up their daughter to translate and describe what they were doing In Horezu the work is separated by gender. The men gather the clay and throw the pottery, while the women apply the intricate designs. As a team they can make 100s/day

A few photos from the area
The plate decorations are common here, especially at the homes and shops of potters. The shop wasn't open, but this is a small museum/shrine to a master potter that always stays open. His son carries on the business A simple workshop Most houses on the Olari street (potter street) simply have an array of pottery attached to a panel as a sort of billboard/shop sign

A few houses had some cheap imports mixed in. Easy to tell from the machined/high gloss look, especially if you look for signatures. Some houses use a stamp to sign

We spent the final day in Horezu, a small town known for its pottery. Their craft is recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The top left image is our haul, the others are cool pieces. Prices ranged from 3$ to 20$. That is bonkers cheap for hand thrown pottery
Our haul! About 40$ (we tipped a little extra, which they were startled by. I don't think they see many Americans). The work of four different artistic families. The rooster and the tree of life are traditional themes. The white base they use as a base to paint on is very specific and somewhat rare, and imported from another part of Romania. The blue dye is also imported. The earthy tones are common because they use local clay colors That's a cool rooster 🐓 😎The snake is a common symbol of protection. Apparently it is tradition for families to have one snake they never kill around the house to protect the home. A sort of inverse Riki Tiki Tavi Also part of our haul. A nice Caleb sized mug

After our meal we explored the citadel a bit more. Pretty little area full of history, food vendors, and cool sculptures. Also the venue for the metal fest we're in the city for! And right across the street from the hotel

Dessert also came out sizzling. A classic saxon recipe of stuffed crepes with fruit chunks and vanilla sauce Dessert here has been bonkers good Whole feast including 5 drinks came to 110$, by far the most we've spent on a meal here.

We had a bonkers dinner inside the old Roman cathedral the city is built around. Sizzling bone marrow appetizer, melt in your mouth pork neck, and the best cut of aged pork I've ever had in my life The potatoes were ridiculously good as well. Couldn't quite place the seasoning

We left the somewhat industrial city of Hunedoara for the more historic and artsy "other capital" of Romania, Alba Iulia. We dropped our laundry at the laundry mat (a worker offered to rotate for us!) and killed some hours grabbing lunch and cold drinks
The roads are so pretty. Short and sweet single hour drive Some lemonade on a hot day! Actually gave myself brain freeze Buying coffee at a ritsy place continues to be the most reliable way to get free water. This was a tasty blueberry espresso thingy

Day three in the books! Started with some Mici from a street vender and a lifetime supply of blueberries for 6$
Mici! Romanian meat logs of mixed beef and pork with some baking soda to keep them springy. Garlic thyme black pepper anise. Served with white bread

Vender didn't know English but that has yet to matter. Just point and hold up fingers
