In a study by Walter Koenig et al., they compared acorn production in Tanoak (insect-pollinated) and true oaks (wind-pollinated). Comparing long-term acorn production data for Tanoak and Cali true oaks, testing the hypothesis that Tanoak shows less evidence of masting behavior than true oaks

Lithophragma maximum is a narrow endemic, restricted to San Clemente Island. Classified as Endangered under both the California and the Federal Endangered Species Act. In this study by Kristen Hasentsab-Lehman et al, they assess the genetic diversity of the species across its range using ddRADseq.

Hybridization is common among plant taxa, and interspecific hybridization has played a major role in plant evolution, including speciation events, adaptive introgression, and range expansion. The authors investigate reports of hybrid oaks to further assess their relationships.

Despite making up only 6.7% of Earth's land area, Islands harbor a large proportion of global biodiversity and support high levels of endemism! In a paper by C. M. Guilliams et al, they focus on the California Islands, a loose archipelago of 16 islands along the coast of western North America.

This week in Madroño, we had the privilege of reading more about the evolution and diversity of Malacothrix and its relatives! In a study conducted by W. S. Davis et al, they followed up on a 2003 study that had previously resolved Malacothrix DC as paraphyletic, with two well-supported nrDNA clades

In the current edition of Madrono, Martha Lizeth Cecena Sanchez et al, described and illustrated a new species for the flora of Guadalupe Island, Mexico. Arctostaphylos, or Manzanitas, is a taxonomically complex genus of ~62 species and 107 total minimum-rank taxa in the heath family, or Ericaceae.

In this Noteworthy Collections of Madrono, Rikke Næborg and Cameron Williams found Abrothallus welwitschii and its host Sticta limbata within a diverse and abundant non-vascular epiphyte community in groves of Quercus tomentella (look at the first slide)!
