How does one watch the Valkyries game? I can’t find NBCSN and don’t have Peacock. #Valkyries

Ogunbowale was the elite player Dallas needed, and the Valkyries fell apart at the end. Very unimpressive performance.

After all the fuss about Coyote v. Acme getting shelved and then released after all, I was ready to be disappointed in the actual film. I was not. It’s a funny, clever and warm movie that’s fun for Looney Tunes fans but should appeal to plenty of other folks. #CoyoteVAcme

There are two fine productions in San Francisco that close soon. Ray of Light’s revival of Urinetown features a wonderful cast and fun choreography. SF Playhouse has the US debut of R.O.I., a fast-placed new play that imagines an unsettling Silicon Valley future that feels already here. #theater

It’s been a while since I rewatched The Sopranos and I was blown away, again, by James Gandolfini’s performance. The show is more Lynchian than I recall (Tony in a coma is one of my favorite episodes) and its closing run of episodes is impressively and appropriately bleak. #Sopranos

The biggest surprise of the Odyssey, for me, was how dull and flat it turned out to be. I have liked several of Christopher Nolan’s other films, but watching an Odysseus with modern-day PTSD and guilt for nearly 3 hours got old. The characters felt flimsy and there was no sense of fun at any time.

I don’t understand World Cup rules at all. Don’t they want the players to decide the game?

Jalen Brunson was Curry-esque in this game.

#Broadway Show #9 of our March trip - Oh, Mary! - I always worry about ‘silly’ plays because I don’t always enjoy them. But Oh, Mary! is a very funny, well-structured play and John Cameron Mitchell plays Mary with a wonderfully over-the-top rage. It was a fun way to end the vacation.

#Broadway Show #8 of our March trip - The Wild Party. I had never been to an Encores! production and this was a very accomplished version of the LaChiusa version of the dark musical at a 1920s party that goes south. Jasmine Amy Rogers, Jordan Donica and Adrienne Warren are standouts as the stars.

#Broadway Show #7 of our March trip. Cats: The Jellicle Ball. I am not familiar with ballroom aside from online searches and only saw Cats on video once. But the revival is a reinvention, features a lot of creative choreography and made total sense to me. I would strongly recommend center mezzanine.

#Broadway Show #6 of our March trip - Ragtime. My unpopular opinion is that Ragtime isn’t a good musical. Even the main characters feel paper-thin and the book isn’t remotely interesting or challenging. Joshua Henry is a great singer but I’ve seen him in far more interesting roles.

#Broadway Show #5 from our March trip - Heathers the Musical. It’s a fun, flawed adaptation but I’m going to fuss over Sara Al-Bazali, the standby for Veronica who played her perfectly. She was fantastic in a tricky role, belting out raunchy rockers and pretty ballads while acting the part well.

#Broadway Show #4 from our March trip - The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is light, silly fun - and a good evening show to see after Death of a Salesman. It was the first of two off-Broadway musicals where understudies played starring roles and stole the show.

#Broadway Show 3 from our March trip: Death of a Salesman. I had never seen Nathan Lane before and he made for an appropriately tragic Willy Loman. Lane can do so much with eyes and body language. It’s a strong, haunting production with a terrific cast and smart direction by Joe Mantello.

#Broadway Show #2 from March trip: Just in Time. The biomusical runs out of a bit of steam in the second act, but Jonathan Groff - as himself playing Bobby Darin - is a marvelous entertainer in every way. We saw him dance with Bernadette Peters and the show was just a lot of fun.

#Broadway Show #1 (from our March trip) - Giant is set in the 1980s but could have been written today, as it addresses Israel and its attacks in Lebanon. John Lithgow plays author Roald Dahl and he is terrific - smart, self-righteous, childish and antisemitic. Lithgow is a captivating throughout.

@emilystjams.bsky.social Rewatching #Deadwood followed by reading your rewatch pieces has been a real treat. You capture the show’s themes of community, which is easy to lose sight of given all the attention-grabbing language, so very well. Season 3 works better than I remember as a series finale,l.

It was both unlikely and fun to see the 49ers beat the odds despite the injuries and serious roster flaws. It’s harder to be optimistic about the future because the FO hasn’t drafted well. Aside from Purdy, who is a good but not great QB, who are the team’s rising stars? #49ers

Unpopular opinion: Marty Supreme belongs in the category of the ‘charming scoundrel’ film, but I didn’t find Marty charming or very interesting. The film just dragged for me, with stupid plot twists piling on each other. I got bored. The conclusion is unearned.

I guess people must have liked the concept of Materialists, because the dreary film is a two-hour slog featuring Dakota Johnson speaking in a monotone for two hours. She’s not entertainingly cynical, just a drip who has no spark with her supposed suitors or anyone else. Whiff by director Celine Song

The final episode of Pluribus’ first season starts with one of its best sequences, as we watch the destruction of Kusimayu. It’s genuinely upsetting. The Carol stuff was frustrating because, while isolation is awful, dense lead characters are worse. I’d rather just root for Manousos. #pluribus

And once again, I am baffled about how to watch the Golden State Warriors game on television.

#Broadway trip Show 6: Dead Outlaw. I’m not sure the creatives have really come up with a thematically coherent reason to tell this strange but mostly true story of an incompetent crook who led an interesting afterlife. Some good dark Americana, but not enough, with an odd streak of nihilism.

#Broadway trip Show 5: Maybe Happy Ending uses familiar rom-com tropes and eye-catching stagecraft - in a story about robots - to ease the audience into a musical about loneliness, loss and death. The show sneaks up on you and was, ironically, the most humanistic musical of our trip.

#Broadway trip, Show 4: Operation Mincemeat. It’s an entertaining, often-hilarious, flawed show with my favorite performance of the week - ‘Dear Bill,’ performed by Jak Malone is a moving story-song that is its own heartbreaking one-act play that elevates the rest of the musical.

#Broadway trip Show 3: Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends. I’m not even feigning evenhandedness. I was thrilled to see Bernadette Peters perform some of my favorite Sondheim songs and thought her ability to convey emotion remains unmatched even if her vocal power is diminished at 77. The show is fun.

#broadway trip apart 2: Jamie Lloyd wants everyone to know he directed the new Sunset Boulevard revival, even if his choices are often self-indulgent and silly. Nicole Scherzinger almost rescues the show by herself with some fantastic vocals. It’s a weird mix.

A roundup from my recent New York City trip and the #Broadway shows I saw (Part 1): Gypsy - I had never seen this classic musical live and Audra McDonald did not disappoint. While I know some purists say her voice isn’t right for the part, McDonald’s acting is top-notch. It was a master class.

Conclave has the virtue of being a well-crafted and well-acted drama. And after a bunch of messy award-nominated films this week, that was a relief. Ralph Fiennes is excellent in the lead role. Now it’s time t watch the Oscars.

The Substance. Where to start? The premise is hackneyed, the rules of the plot make no sense. The movie feels endless and turns into an excuse for Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley’s characters (they never really seem like split versions of the same person) to beat the crap out of each other.

Tonight’s film was Anora, and I guess I just missed the charm that so many critics ascribe to it. The title character seemed like a greedy fool. The endless search for her twit of a husband just grew tiresome. It’s not the worst of the nominees I’ve seen thus far but that’s not saying much.

Tonight’s Academy Award nominee was I’m Still Here, an extraordinary and moving film about a wife and mother whose former congressman husband is disappeared by the Brazilian government in the 1970s. Fernanda Torres gives a spectacular performance.

It’s disheartening to go on a late Academy Awards nominee watch and encounter two movies I strongly disliked: Emilia Perez and The Brutalist. The former is bad silliness; the latter falls apart completely in the second half.
