Silver & Iron: Part Three Pages 8/48

The woman is still smirking, but looks decidedly less confident. “Really? You’re gonna rough up a girl…?” Maddoc responds quizzically. “Damn, no scars, no clue - what backwater dump did they drag you out from? I can tell you right now, here in the city, we know that kind of shit doesn’t make a difference to us.” Maddoc grabs the black-haired werewolf around the throat. The woman steps forward, a worried look on her face, but as of yet does nothing else. Maddoc: “Then again, if you were from around here, you’d know who I am, and you’d know it’d take more than a half-assed ambush to take me down.” He pats the werewolf down. “So assuming quote-unquote whoever you’re working for does know me… He’d know better than to send out a couple of rookies… without an ace up their sleeves.” As he says this he pulls out a tiny squeeze-able vial with a needle point. It is coloured green, though it’s unclear whether this is the actual colour of the liquid it contains or just a stylistic choice. Maddoc grins with a set of sharp teeth as he eyes it. “Hello, Wolfsbane. I can see why you thought you’d have a chance with a few shots of- Lady, come on.” He interrupts himself, flat and unimpressed, as the woman, now transformed into a werewolf herself, attempts to stab him with her own green vial of wolfsbane, her wolf face contorted in fury.

Maddoc simply swings the black-haired werewolf around by the neck to act as a shield, to the woman werewolf’s shock, causing her to stab the vial into the black-haired werewolf’s shoulder. He begins to de-transform immediately, loosing steam with the energy. The werewolf woman yells out “P.J!” Maddoc lets the werewolf named P.J. slump to the ground with a grin. “You gotta be more careful with this stuff. You even know how expensive it is?” He takes advantage of the woman’s momentary distraction to slam the vial of wolfsbane he stole off P.J. into the werewolf woman’s stomach. Maddoc: “Thanks for the freebie.” He dusts off his hands as he speaks to the woman, also rapidly de-transforming and nursing her stomach. Maddoc: “Look, it’s pretty obvious you’ve never done anything like this before. I dunno what the Wolfes are paying you, but maybe you give us a little info-” He nudges P.J. on the ground with his foot - “Maybe we show you and Jammies here a little leniency…” P.J. winces with a grunt of pain. Maddoc rolls his eyes. “Come on, now, kid, I barely-” He pauses, then looks at P.J. more intently, his expression dark.

Maddoc swoops down to the ground, ignoring the woman beating her fists against his back. Woman: “Get away from him! Stop it! I’ll kill you! I swear to God, if you-” Maddoc, interrupting: “Are you fucking serious?” He has yanked up P.J.’s tank top to reveal a large gauze sticking plaster over the side of his stomach. Blood is seeping through the plaster in a crescent shape. Maddoc turns back to the werewolf woman, nostrils flared and teeth bared, lit in stark shadows. Maddoc: “You two were fucking bit? You really are that new stupid.” Panels focus on the woman and P.J. looking nervous but saying nothing as Maddoc continues reprimanding them: “No wonder you don’t know shit. Do you have any idea what those idiots roped you into? That they sent you into enemy territory? How disposable you are?” The woman starts to resist again, Maddoc holding her back by the shoulder. Woman: “Let us go! I- I’ll start screaming!” Maddoc, flatly: “Christ’s sake, I’m trying to help you. You think your quote-unquote boss isn’t just gonna kill you to cover this up?”

Maddoc: “If you come with me, I can-” Woman, yelling: “Now!” Forgotten on the ground behind them, P.J. swiftly slams his shin between Maddoc’s legs and makes absolute mincemeat out of the poor bastard’s balls, the whole panel filled with a sickening crunch. The woman grabs P.J.’s hand as she runs past, hauling him off the ground, and they escape, along with the other two bruised and beaten werewolves, leaving Maddoc knocked over and curled up on the ground like a pathetic dead beetle you find in the back of your pantry. A short panel implies the sun is rising over the city of Seattle, and Clemence arrives fashionably late, holding two takeaway coffee cups and wearing a trench coat. He laughs as soon as he sees Maddoc, still lying flat on his back to let his wolfman nards breathe. Maddoc: “Man, shut up.” Clemence: “What happened here?” Maddoc: “Coupla mercs trying their luck on the new moon. I pulled off a snooker, though.” He clonks his fists together to illustrate. Clemence: “Nice. So who was it? Wolfes?” Maddoc hauls himself up and reaches for the cup Clemence is holding out for him. Maddoc: “Can’t say for sure, they were bit.” Clemence: “Oh,shit?” Maddoc: “But if it walks like a Wolfe, stinks like a Wolfe… Goldwin’s really lost the fuckin’ plot. We’d probably know more if you’d been here. How long’s it take to get a cup of coffee?” Maddoc takes off the cup’s domed lid and tries a bit of the whipped topping. Clemence: “Had to take a call about those two victims. They had a kid.” (Aside: And that doesn’t qualify as coffee any more.) Maddoc: “Ah, fuck. That’s a shame.” (Aside: You seen my shoes?) Maddoc’s expression turns more serious as Clemence continues. “That’s a problem. Kid’s missing. If she was with them that night, where is she now?” Maddoc takes a very serious slurp of frappe.

SILVER & IRON: Part Three: By Landeg.
Night. Starless cloudy sky. The page opens on Maddoc, sitting on the edge of a rooftop, looking behind him at two enormous transformed werewolves who are closing in on and circling him, growling. Maddoc, seemingly unaffected: “Alright, so you’re all carrying sachets. Send me in to sniff out the canary, then jump me in the coalmine. That’s a little smarter.” The woman who lured him into this trap in part two smiles, her hands clasped together sarcastically. “No, please! Tell me more! I’m learning SO much.” Maddoc rises to his feet, leaning over to brace against his knees, eyes on the werewolves. “Well, no matter how obvious, it’s still my job to spring these traps.” He observes the two werewolves, one with an elongated face, the other shorter and snubby. They both leer at him as they prowl. Maddoc: “Damn, but you’re not small, though.” He stands with hands in his pockets, kicking his slide sandals off his feet as he steps forward. “Okay. You figure, it’s a new moon, Maddoc Lovell is gonna be at his weakest. So will you, but then you figure you can make up for quality with quantity.” The panel focuses on his face, grinning unnervingly. “You must be that new stupid.”

Maddoc slams his fist into the sternum of the long-faced werewolf faster than either of them can react, knocking the wolf back and winding it. By the time the other werewolf has caught on and spun around to try and attack him, Maddoc has already turned to dodge, then reaches behind himself to grab the hind leg of the first werewolf, who reacts with an exclamation mark. Maddoc sizes up the second werewolf before hauling the first werewolf up by the leg and around in a mighty swing aimed directly at the second, who stands, cartoonishly, a single comma above their head.

Maddoc clonks the werewolf’s heads together like a pair of clackers, stunning them and making it look easy. The two werewolves are thrown by the impact and skid for a moment, but by the time they have leapt back to their feet, snarling, Maddoc has quote-unquote “pulled the pin” on his enchanted earring, swinging from its anchor industrial piercing.

It’s too late - Maddoc has fully transformed, and bro is massive, proportioned more like a gorilla than a werewolf. His short choppy human hairstyle translates to choppy, scruffy werewolf hair over most of his body, and large wolf ears placed more at the sides of his head look almost like a bat. He’s smirking with one arm swinging behind him, seconds away from connecting with the two attacking werewolves, who have no time left to do anything but watch. He knocks them down to the street below where the woman and the black-haired werewolf who acted as bait in chapter two are still waiting. “Okay,” Maddoc says as he jumps down to join them, landing on one of the other poor werewolves with a crunch, “If I ask nicely, will you tell me who hired you? Or am I gonna ask meanly?”
