Cheney was an exception, important to point out. Biden, Harris, and Pence were the more common type of VP - their purpose was to occasionally say thing the President couldn't say, and take the sacrifice.

I think that the humanities' only possible future is to own the fact that what we do is important and difficult, not to change what we do so it seems like an easy A in comparison to STEM. Then again, I'm a Lecturer with no power. We'll just retreat some more.

But it ISN'T our job to change the goalposts so students can do them without learning new skills and information, or without trying hard. Suggest that in a physics class regarding an exam and they'd say "Yes, it's hard. This is college. I'm here to teach you to do something hard."

Several students said, of a recent midterm, that they had never been asked to answer multiple questions in a single prompt before, or that they didn't know how to make historical arguments. Fine! First year of college, it's our job to teach you!

I got in something of a debate with a colleague yesterday about to evaluate students after LLMs. Granted I'm a pessimist and also a dinosaur, but I fundamentally disagree with the idea that we need to bend evaluation to where students are *already* at and what they are *already* capable of.

someone asked me to share my syllabus for their own scholarly work now, due to LLMs, I must constantly ask myself - is this going to be stolen from me just by sharing it with a colleague?

Is there space for this student. Are their bodily needs being met. Is the time enough time. Where are they looking. What are they listening to. Are they writing. Am I answering. Etc.

I simply can't work on academic things right now. No brain space for it. That Foucault guy was really onto something when he said that education consisted of the manipulation and regulation of the human body. Feel like most of my job is: are the students in the right spaces at the right times.

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

makes sense! i'm just teaching the Cold War right now and always caution students to recall that any stability it brought in the US was at the cost of the devastation of WWII in Europe and the violence of decolonization and the early Cold War elsewhere

not quite my field so I'm just curious - would you define stability as growth that benefits workers as well as capitalists? or does it also involve relative geopolitical peace?

Dems will try to sweep it all under the rug, again they might win this election by doing that! then they'll lose the next one, the line will move, and they'll sweep it under the rug - again, and again, and again

Spain's government calls for snap election - folks, even if the Dems win the midterms in the US, basically the ENTIRE REST OF THE DEVELOPED WOLRD is controlled by conservative or right-wing parties this is VERY DIFFERENT from the 1920s-30s. as Thatcher said: there is no alternative
