Invincible, The Boys: What if there were these infinitely powerful bastards who, get this, used their infinite power to be infinite bastards 🥱 Aldnoah Zero: but! what if you could beat them by being a nerd with the self-preservation instincts of a pringles can in student accommodation ☺️

so the reason for my little reply burst is because that age-old question came up in a discord and i was like "buddy, even in the mobile market there's room for art amid the microtransactions, let me tell you a tale of a match-3 i once played..." and i finally thought "i should check bluesky"!

the heartbreaking thing is that games need writers like you because otherwise they don't even break the surface!! but no, the industry is allowed maybe two decently written games a year and everything else has to be unremarkable dross 😭

Every time I go back to Subnormality (usually to find Everything's Better With Cheese) I end up rereading old favourites. www.viruscomix.com/page596.html Count to Ten is about choice and yearning, and these panels still make me cry every time I read them. Thank you, @winstonrowntree.bsky.social
Five panels of a webcomic.

Text: And just because you missed it doesn't mean it's good...
Image: A road splitting in a wood, like that Robert Frost poem.

Text: it means you believe that there IS good,
Image: Long-haired person in tatty clothes standing at bus stop in autumn (the trees are bare).

Text: ...and if it's not here, then it must be somewhere else.
Image: Long-haired person is on the bus now, looking out of the window.

Image: The bus proceeds down a road, away from the viewer, autumn leaves on the road around it.

Text: So there must be a road.
Image: The bus has gone out of sight. The road and the trees and the failling autumn leaves remain.

I can't think of a time that Britain's government have moved left deliberately. Certainly since the Industrial Revolution our politics have served money, and only ever veered left when that politics caused too much damage to enough people that it became unignorable.

I couldn't get to grips with blazor because of all the assumptions it made on behalf of the dev; passing my eye over some example angular projects, the syntax looks pretty thorny and very much like blazor's polar opposite, yeah 😵‍💫

time to be mildly annoying: if it's returning errors plural, then I'd expect an array of strings - and the empty array if no errors...?

My son is watching a youtube video in which a minecraft player is modding the game to introduce mobs ('mobile entities': creatures) that look like retired letters of the alphabet (the thorn and ampersand so far). What a strange and wonderful modern culture fusion thing.

DeepSeek's model takes 30x less electricity to answer the same question. So no matter where people use it, the electricity load will drop for a long while before it starts to increase again. Even in the worst case scenario, we get more time.

You could consider LLMs to be 'synthetic imagination', but only imagination. An AGI is the sci-fi dream, we could maybe use this synthetic imagination as a part of the eventual Thing, but we're still at the point of fumbling in the dark when it comes to the eventual shape and form of an AGI.

I can't be the only one seeing deep seated similarities with religious Rapture fixation? 'everything will get worse and we don't need to make any effort to reduce the badness because at the end of it all the worthy will be rewarded by a magical good'

I'll drop a Deptford Mice recommendation here as well - I haven't read it for a while but my rose-tinted spectacles say it ran magical, dark, grim, and the few social boundaries it had were critiqued heavily within the books. (have to find some old copies now, my tiny home bookshelf demands them)

First, peck the achilles heel. Buffet with wings, discombobulate. Opponent staggers: peck left foot. Opponent trips and falls, makes acquaintance with floor. Prognosis: fractured nose, bruised ego. Physical recovery: two weeks. Psychological recovery: never.

Two 4tb HDDs started SMART-failing at the same time (not too surprising, they were from the same batch and both about ten years old). 4tb SSD acquired. First drive took fifteen days to copy everything off that I wanted to keep. Second drive mostly redownloadable, but still on track for two-day copy.

We really do. I have a lot of privilege in my current situation but even here I routinely find people operating on assumptions attached to the fact that I have ADHD. I make small mistakes and those are turned into an unreliability narrative. But for as long as it doesn't cost me the job...

It's not an easy process, altering your work patterns and methods. But now that I have this new context, I can't stay on the old path. It'll take time to find a new paradigm that works for me and doesn't trip others up, but it's got to be done.

I use the phrase 'cognitive trip hazard' deliberately; one of our accessibility committees has recently started to explore the intersection of neurodiversity and accessibility, and I can't help but think this belongs in that ballpark.

Jason Caits-Cheverst @caitscheverst.bsky.social · 07/12/2024
Levity can be useful. It can also be a cognitive trip hazard. (this doesn't replace the previous caveats: it can also still be interpreted as disrespectful or unprofessional regardless of intent)
