National park signs on women and LGBTQ+ history are disappearing. Librarians are preserving the record
The revisions have scrubbed or softened accounts of violence, slavery, activism and lived experiences, raising questions about whose stories the government considers worth telling.

Speaking of suffrage memorials - the centennial in 2020 brought a wave of markers. The National Collaborative for Women's Historical Sites put up many #Suffs markers and created a map to crowd source others. ncwhs.org/votes-for-wo... #HATM

Hopping on the #HATM tonight for Suffs! I’ve been working with folks at the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument (BEPA) - the former headquarters of NWP and the longtime home of Alice Paul - for the last two years. Many of the objects there helped inspire some of the lyrics in the show.

Maybe it’s just the Humanities professor in me, but let it be noted that events of today (ahem) have demonstrated the value of being able to assess a large volume of qualitative data and do careful textual analysis with deep attention to context.

In an executive order, Trump targeted the Smithsonian and the National Museum of African American History & Culture suggesting that it is “divisive” and pedaling “improper ideology.” So, I took a trip back to the museum, and what I saw was a place trying to tell the unvarnished truth about America.

Before NPS terminated its agreement with my program, I planned to write about Pauli Murray on my park’s site using language about gender identity from the Pauli Murray Center. Quickly learned from the higher ups that it wasn’t going to happen.

We need public history practice now more than ever. We must foster critical thinking, facilitate difficult dialogue and center human dignity. We must believe, support, and empower people whose lived experiences are marginalized and dismissed. We must preserve connection and community. And we will.
