Higher critical studies of the last century have raised important questions regarding the unity of Numbers 22–24. Balaam’s multifaceted profession, for example, is often considered a marker for blende...

Why We CAN Read the Torah, Fractures and All
We run up against it from the very beginning. In the first chapter of Genesis we read that “God created the man in his image; in the image of God he created him—male and female he created them” (Ge…

In her discussion of Exod 3:15b, she critiques the notion of parallelism as synonim and prefer to see the second line as "nonrestrictive appositive that provides an additional or alternative description of the anchor". I think this and what you are proposing express a way of thinking. 3/3

But I agree that heterophynic is better because it avoids harmony. Although, do you think there is some cohesion at least on the level of the Pentateuchal and Deuteronomist narrative? The other thing your description reminded me of is Ellen Van Wolde's short take on Hebrew parallelism. 2/3

Thanks for taking the time. Finally someone is writing this book and I'm glad it's you. Your description reminded me of two things. Are you aware of Carol Newsom's use of Bakhtin's concet of dialogical truth to frame this diversity of voices in the Hebrew Bible? She does speak of "polyphonic". 1/3

They are finally here. This is the result of a couple of years of intense work on my part and many other years by Peter. It is an unthinkable achievement for me. I truly hope to have contributed significantly to the academia and meaningfully to believing communities.

This one is now published online. This is my response to views that the Priestly writings advance privilege and power. I show that Priestly cultic instructions align well with utopian and democratizing ideals critical of every form of centralized systems of power. brill.com/view/journal...

I'm certainly inclined to think of power and money as the reasons for the history of the church in general. But, how do you find the balance of taking into consideration other reasons, such as theology?

I had a good experience with BI. Reviewers were thorough in their comments. Even when they did not have the theoretical expertise (I used Gramsci's concept of hegemony) their comments were useful. I also recommend @jibs-journal.bsky.social for Bible and theory, as well as Bible and Critical Theory.

I just read Genesis 49:25 yesterday and for the first time I thought that this might refer to the deity, meaning that El Shadday has breasts and womb to bless.

There was some flux of Judeans to Galilee after the Hasmonean rule ended, and lot's of family property was lost and accumalated by Herodians and the economic elite during that period. That claims makes no sense with what I have researched of first century BCE Judea and Galilee.

Yeah, I don't think Luke just got the time wrong on the Quirinu's census, he was just using this historical fact to create his narrative with a theological purpose.

Thanks for spreading this important correction. I just need to say that the "Israelite four-room" houses, according to Avraham Faust, disapperared after Iron Age, and that the whole ground level store was roofed. Still, the division between spaces for humans and animals is granted.

Fascinating! I believe keeping the literal rendering is the best option as well, because it plays with cognitive approaches to language and knowledge. Your piece reminded me of the chapter Broken Hearts and Broken Legs in Lieberman's Social: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Connect.

For this reason, although I make an effort to recognize honestly the possibility that biblical texts may reflect patriarchal, misogynistic, xenophobic and violent purposes, I deliberately choose not to let this be the last word about the biblical text.

My sensitivity to the margins and to ethics also leads me to value dialogical, dynamic, non-violent and cooperative approaches to interpretation that I believe can be best described as postcolonial hermeneutics.

Matters of identity unrelated to biological ties, family and communitarian life, inequality of access to social and material resources, food production and consumption, and political oppression and violence have moved to the centre of my scholarship and interpretation of the biblical text.

Most fundamentally, my personal experience and identity have led me to pay attention to the margins and to social ethics when approaching the biblical text.

My scholarship has grown out of and is intertwined with my own and my wife’s long history of Christian missionary ministry among vulnerable children and teens in the slums of São Paulo. Last, but not least, as a result of our missionary ministry, we are adoptive parents of two beautiful children.

Several characteristics of my personal experience and identity make me a part of the privileged status quo of Christian Western biblical scholarship... Many other parts of who I am, however, distance me from this position. I am Brazilian, live in Brazil, and work as an independent scholar.

I will follow Madison here and share how I narrate my personal identity, experience and theology that inform or can influence my approach to the biblical text. This is part of the Auhor's Preface in the new Tyndale volume on Numbers I coauthored with Peter Altmann, to be published January 2025:

Very interesting to read this. I still don't understand the correlation between Baptist, liturgy and sacraments, though :) Peter Altmann and me also spelled out our personal experiences, identity and theology in the Preface to our Numbers' commentary. This should be standard at this point.
