yeah, similarly, when i was house hunting here, i made sure to only look at stuff above the tsunami inundation zone, much of which can also flood during big storm surge/king tide situations. there was a really bad one here in 2006 (125mm of rain in <12 hrs, + largest high tide of the year)
Floodwaters rushing from a wide street into a vacant lot that's at a lower elevation. The entire street beyond the lot is inundated with brown waterLarge area near the harbour entirely flooded, a pickup truck can be seen submerged almost to the top of its hood, in front of several buildings

That had to be it. I was thinking it was more like the older, pointier bay & gable style (also common in that part of town, & where i was living when i felt the windstorm sway it) but if that house had had a large front porch, that might've done it. Many of *these* houses have no front porch at all
stock photo of a couple of Victorian 3-storey "bay and gable" style houses in Toronto. These are "semi-detached", i.e. duplexes, so each pointy gable belongs to a separate house. Many of these houses have been further subdivided into apartments.

Makes sense with tornadoes, but i'm still puzzling over how that house was put together, that a heavy snow load would do that very specific damage. here's a google streetview from that general neighbourhood. the "front fell off" house might've been similar to the beige one at centre
google streetview image of a residential street in west end Toronto, with older houses with steep gabled roofs. These are newer than the more famous Victorian "bay and gable" style which are much narrower & pointier

Stayed out til "bat o'clock" again, stayed out til i could barely even see to unhook the very last fish Had i been camping, some of those trout probably would've ended up in the frying pan for breakfast, but tonight i was happy to just let them all go & so ends a pretty good day :)

Sun's down, the alpenglow is off the mountain
the calm mountain lake, now just after sunset, with the sky still bright but the trees & peak no longer lit up by the setting sun. the mountain looks more bluish-purple here. Slight ripples in the water in foreground are caused by me

maybe first time ever (i've fished this lake for 20 years) i had all wild cutthroat, not a single rainbow. Most of the cutts were smallish & taking emerging mayflies out of the surface film - immense fun on the 3 weight. but then i tied on a variation of a muddler minnow & got these bigger guys
Head & shoulder portrait of a lake-resident coastal cutthroat trout partially submerged in a black mesh landing net. It's a slender salmonid fish with a large toothy mouth, big dark eye, & a bronzy-gold body shading to pale yellow on the belly, covered with tiny dark spots. There is a pinkish blush on the trout's operculum (gill cover). The bright reddish orange slash marks that give this species its name are not visible in this shot. It has a bushy looking trout fly sticking out of the opposite side of its lower jawAnother cutthroat trout that fell for the same bushy looking minnow fly. This one has darker colouring, some larger black spots on its cheek, & a deeper red blush on its operculum. Its orange pectoral and pelvic fins are also visible & the spotting on its body is denser than on the previous troutFull body shot of another cutthroat trout lying half-submerged in the bottom of the net. The spots covering its body get slightly larger towards the tail. The red/orange "cutthroat" mark is just barely visible under its lower jawA dry, unfished verson of the fly that caught the trout in the previous 3 photos. this is one of many variations of a classic pattern called a Muddler Minnow. it has a body of long white hair (icelandic sheep, i think) with a couple of greenish peacock herl fibres on the back and black & white striped rooster hackle on the sides. not quite visible in this photo are some synthetic flash fibres. The head of the fly is made from spun & cllipped deer hair & there are a few red feather fibres underneath to suggest a wounded, bleeding baitfish.

a David Bowie cover called "Always Fishing on the Same Lake" but, do you blame me. i'm pretty much always set up to come to this one with minimal prep. even if it's just for an hour and a half at the end of the day
A still mountain lake in early evening on a cloudless October day, the shoreline surrounded by forest (mostly fir trees). The snowless mountain peak and the tops of the trees at the far end of the lake are lit up reddish gold by the setting sun. The rise-ring of a feeding trout is visible as a short bright line on the water's surface just below the base of the mountain

Looking downstream on the river as the canyon narrows once again. Bigleaf maples are shining gold in the bright sunshine. The trunk of a fallen tree bridges the river; downstream of it is a tall fir tree, leaning slightly over the river, setting itself off from the dense surrounding forest

Wrong time of day to really light up the salmon, but you can see them a bit better in this shot. Someone with a fancy video rig was in the "good" spot, filming them jumping up the falls. i'll come back & do that soon, this was only supposed to be a "potty break" for me, lol. i can come here anytime
a closer shot of the canyon pool below the rapids & fish ladder, with moss covered rocks on the far shore, ferns & the brownish feathery seed heads of goat's beard in the foreground. It is easier to see the salmon in the pool here as they rest before the next obstacle in their journey home

Looking upstream from the narrow canyon below the top falls & fish ladder
A white, rapid river widens out into a slow, very deep pool in a small canyon. Due to the angle of the sun at this time of day, it appears very dark except where it's reflecting the clear blue sky. there are small streams of white bubbles on the surface & maybe if you blow the image up you can see salmon underneath in the dark area

A more zoomed out still shot of the potholes, & the pool & rapid next to them
A clear green river with some rapids at right easing out into a deep pool at left. at lower right foreground is a broad shelf of flat rock with a couple potholes being worn into it by years of river flow. The river is unusually low for this time of year (October)

The low water allows a glimpse into how Potholes are Made (river potholes, not road potholes) But there are plenty of the latter on the road in, despite recent repairs - folks with low-clearance vehicles beware. The ground around here is in constant motion, really

all right who ordered the superstack of pancakes? 😹 not sure what these are, can't find my big Arora, in any case can't pick to key out cuz it's a park & i'm 99.999% sure they're not edible anyway. Some kind of basidomycetes, Ok? LOL
Big clusters of brownish mushrooms with tan edges, looking for all the world like stacks of perfectly cooked pancakes, sprouting from the base of a large mossy tree. A small group of other more mushroom-shaped mushrooms grows just below them, with a couple topless stems where people have removed the caps (this is a park, don't do that!). A few brownish fallen maple leaves and brilliant green ferns are also visible. A roundish white growth on the right side of the tree's base is a baby conk fungus

the river is freakishly low for October. but that's getting to be more of the norm than the exception. I'm sure the bears don't mind having a lot more walking room & more bottlenecks for salmon (note: human fishing is prohibited this close to the falls)
Clear green river, glimpsed from a high bank, through trees silhouetted by the bright sun. Bigleaf maples are bright gold for fall. The exposed river bottom here is a flat expanse of reddish rock, worn into potholes and other depressions by the river's action

"Here" being Stamp Falls Provincial Park. Best time of year to see it: salmon running, bears fishing (didn't see any on this brief stop), bigleaf maples glowing. I definitely wasn't the only person with this idea, but *still* - not what i'd call crowded.
A river begins its stepped run to a fairly large waterfall, surrounded by mixed forest, with young maple trees in foreground beginning to show fall colour in the bright sunshine. A bit of concrete fish ladder structure & the corner of a roof (the little building containing the video fish counting system) intrude at right into an otherwise pretty wild-looking setting

ok so 2nd attempt at urgent care clinic went better. it only blew about 2.5 hours, lol. Nice doc, masked for *all* pts, no need to ask. he doesn't think it's strep, but took a swab & will call. Had to pee after i left, but not leg-crossingly badly, so it was worth the extra drive to come here:

Ok, one more for now. Same beach, looking in the opposite direction from the first photo. There are houses all along this beach, but one of the finest things in Canadian law (imo) is that with very few exceptions, all beaches are public access. Despite that, I have *never ever* seen this one crowded

The raccoon's Breakfast Buffet. In the foreground is a rock with a very stylish 'do... close-up at right Posting photo threads is more enjoyable than making phone calls and Doing Important Adult Stuff but i really need to get my butt in gear here
Vertical shot of an expanse of sandy beach at low tide on a partly cloudy fall morning. it is lit dramatically by a low, diffuse sun. shallow ripples in the sand caused by waves are partially filled with seawater. if you zoom in on the photo you may be able to see tiny holes in the sand made by various burrowing creatures. a small rock, isolated on the expanse of sand, with a lush growth of green seaweed growing on it. it patiently waits for the return of the tide. Tiny holes made by burrowing invertebrates can be seen in the sand surrounding the rock

One of my absolute favourite Van Goghs. The starry nights & colourful cornfields tend to get most of the attention, but i've always loved this painting of people just sitting around enjoying a good potato meal
"Aardappeleters" (The Potato Eaters) by Vincent Van Gogh. 5 people (2 men and 3 women, one who has her back to the viewer) sit around a table in a small peasant cottage, with an overhead oil lamp providing some light on the table. they are sharing a big plate of cooked potatoes and apparently enjoying some dinner conversation. The woman at right is pouring tea, while the man next to her holds up his white teacup. the cups have no handles so he is cradling it in his hand like a small bowl
