Taya finally turned, books clanking on metal as she stepped back aboard the Skipper. "We've been through this before, Leyli: I'm a privateer: I kill pirates for money."
"And before that you were a pirate-"
Taya took another step forward, books clanking on the dock. "And before that an Imperial officer, so what's your point? We've been through this before."
Leyahn took a step forward. She was close enough to feel the other captain's breath on her face, to look into eyes as cold as shark's. "Why is a traitor rushing to save the Empress of the Empire she betrayed?"
"I don't care about your brat," Taya told her. "I care about killing pirates and there's a whole sky full of them waiting to die. Again, what's your point? I thought you wanted to bring me to justice for my crimes?" She narrowed her eyes, killer's gaze boring into Leyahn's own.
"I-I do," Leyahn respond, breaking eye contact. "I..." An impulse briefly rushed into her mind, hot and desperate, and it took all her will to push it down. "I never understood you," she said at last, almost as if she had to say something, anything, to keep from acting.
"And if the Divine is merciful," Taya breathed around the kiss Leyahn was afraid to give, "you never will."
It was quick, so quick it might not have happened, but just as they broke apart the Skipper's radioman peaked out from inside the ship.

For a little extra detail, a little prior, while walking through a slave market, Taya explains to Nessa exactly what the consequences of angering the man she subsequently angered would be.

As some of the slavers eyed her Nessa scratched her neck nervously and moved to stay as close to Taya as possible, even going so far as to try and hold her hand.
She was able to calm down somewhat when Taya led them around the bend and down a narrow road which opened up to reveal a large, well-appointed house of fine construction painted in a shade of pink most incongruous with the surroundings.
There Taya turned to her Cat and took her by the hand.
"Nessa," Taya said, rubbing the soft fur on the back of Nessa's hand, "have I told you what a fetching coat you have?"
"Ya...think so?" Nessa replied, ears perking up and tail waving even as she shyly turned her gaze from the other woman.
"Oh yes! The gray brings to mind the color of winter skies and the color of your spots-" Taya drew a finger across Nessa's wrist from one spot to another "-is like unto snow-flecked obsidian. Why, cleaned up with fine shampoo, brushed, and oiled, you coat would be proclaimed far and wide for its beauty!"
"C-captain, I d-don't know what ta say..." Nessa stammered, only risking the slightest of eye contact.
"Nessa, I bring this up," Taya said, fingers now softly stroking the Catgirl's palm, "because the man we are meeting is a seller of artifacts, and not that crude trash in the market. No, these are the sort men will fight for, kill for, and die for. So, when we enter the premises, Nessa," Taya's figures encircled Nessa's wrist, "I would strongly advise you to not touch anything," Taya's grip tightened like a vice, "because if you do Clothor will know and he will skin you alive and turn that lovely coat of yours into a rug."
"Uh..."
"And, Nessa, note that I am not speaking metaphorically. He has done it before, I have seen the rug, it is very nice, and it matches the decor of his parlor perfectly." Taya pulled Nessa close and locked eyes with her. "Do you understand me?"
Nessa, flat-eared, wide-eyed, and limp-tailed, nodded. Off to the side Misters Ears and Talligan chuckled evilly.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts I had Lizard but it was a boring passage so I chose Reptilian instead. Captain Taya Hellarcher and retinue go to acquire with a very shady man about several individuals purloined by perfidious pirates.

Privateer Captain Taya Hellarcher and her Catgirl Nessa inquire with a gentleman named "Clothor" about six victims kidnapped by pirates. Clothor is cadaverous, reptilian looking, and possesses a rather unpleasant personality. Not in the mood to negotiate, he admits to having purchased the captives and agrees to sell if Taya will negotiate.

After this they discuss an artifact Clothor may know about - the Angel's Oculus - and while they talk Clothor catches Nessa inching toward a case full of valuable artifacts and threatens to skin her alive. Nessa denies any ill intent and both Taya and Clothor call her out as a liar.

Her building is falling apart: chipped and moldy concrete walls, pipes leaking water (or worse), dimly-lit halls, elevators that often infrequently work, homeless people sleeping outside or in homemade "coffins" (enclosed bunk beds), and everything smells like trash, sewage, and mold.

Onboard the wrong airship at the wrong time with the wrong treasure in her greedy hands she's plummeting to her doom and her salvation comes in the form of Taya Hellarcher, Captain of the privateer Hell's Arrow. Clapped in irons, she's sure to hang, but Nessa has a trump card: the Angel's Oculus. She had it in her hands, she knows how it works, and she can lead Taya in inestimable wealth if the ruthless pirate hunter will just unlock these damned cuffs.
Also, she's lying, but details details.
But priceless artifacts or the rumors thereof come with baggage. The two women, already about to kill each other, find themselves in the sights of some of the most powerful forces in the Empire and a fleet of supposedly-noble air pirates who also happen to be Taya's old comrades. Now they're on the run and tangled in a conspiracy that might doom an empire. It would be simple to just cut and run, find the Oculus (that, we should remember, Nessa is lying about . . . or is she?) and let the two forces destroy each other but if life were that simple neither would be in this situation.

#pretendpanel I already mentioned the Myst books but one of the neatest rpgs I ever had - The End - was designed to be the size of a Bible with a faux-leather cover and gilt edges, plus its chapters were named after various books of the Bible. So-so game but the book was awesome to look at!

Been messing around trying to verify some of this stuff again because the numbers were correct back when this was bouncing around a couple years ago. The current (2025/26) individual income is about $45,000, so a big jump, however I don't know if the amount in the graphic is pre-tax or post-tax.
