We find the balms as we do in these times, and last night's show by #Annahstasia at the @cafedunord.bsky.social (the Swedish American in particular) was absolutely one of them. The attention she's now getting is well deserved, so do yourself a favor and check out the album/see her live.
The avant/folk singer Annahstasia, a Black artist, sitting on stage at the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco. She has long wavy dark hair and is sitting down on a chair playing an acoustic guitar and singing into a microphone. The stage curtains behind her show up in purple light and the silhouettes of audience members can be seen in front of the stage.

thanks for the love @sfexaminer.bsky.social and James Salazar "Operators say that the full-time performance venue hosts more than 170 shows a year — most featuring independent performers in genres including electronic, hip hop and rock — to sold-out crowds of 300 people"
Upcoming concerts include Nigerian American singer-songwriter Annahstasia, queer country-music artist Fancy Hagood, lesbian alternative-pop musician Rio Romeo and the transgender, nonbinary singer-songwriter NoSo. Cafe Du Nord employees said the venue’s allure can also be attributed to the fact that the venue is a launching pad for artists who are on major national tours or performing along the West Coast. Prior performers include Blink 182, Bon Iver and Janelle Monae. Cafe Du Nord has also given visitors new ways to experience some of their favorite artists. In honor of Lady Gaga’s string of shows at Chase Center in Mission Bay next month, Cafe Du Nord is hosting a dance party to celebrate her discography. Promoters have also held other events for fans of artists such as Britney Spears, Madonna and Beyoncé. No matter the event, MacNiven said his favorite part of any night is “having 300 people ready to go crazy.”

San Francisco’s Hottest Summer Concerts: 9 Must-See Shows: Mikaela Davis, joined by Lily Seabird, brings her mesmerizing harp-driven sound to the iconic Café du Nord this July. She will showcase a unique blend of psychedelic folk, rock, and 60s pop-inspired melodies. Altogether, this creates an intimate and unforgettable live experience. Fans should expect songs from her latest album, And Southern Star, along with past favorites.

The Market Street venue is nestled in the historic Swedish American Hall, offering an intimate setting with a 320-person capacity. Cafe du Nord, known for hosting up-and-coming artists, as well as legendary musicians, features a vintage speakeasy vibe, dimmed lighting, a built-in stage, and a full-service bar; all combining for a special atmosphere for music lovers.

Fly Blackbird Fly: Amazing time seeing #LadyBlackbird at a sold-out Cafe Du Nord with 300 other Bay Area fans who braved a chilly Monday night to show love for one of the greatest singers of our times. Cont'd (long post) #musicsky #music #chrisseefried #cafedunord #sanfranciscomusic #liveconcert
Fly Blackbird Fly - Had an amazing time seeing Lady Blackbird at a sold-out Cafe Du Nord with some 300 other Bay Area fans who braved a chilly Monday night to show their love for one of the greatest singers of our times.

Stripped-back and quazi-unplugged, her set with longtime accompanist, arranger, co-songwriter Chris Seefreid commanded rapt, needle-pin-drop-quiet audience attention even just with his rich acoustic and Fender Stratocaster guitars.

Standout moments were many among tunes from her albums, Black Acid Soul and Slang Spirituals.

In a spine-tingling, Elvis Costello-worthy tease, they brilliantly added a touching Roberta Flack homage amidst a gorgeous “Someday We’ll Be Free,” fully owning a moment of Ewan McColl’s “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” (a cover for which Flack won the record of the year Grammy in 1972). Chris’ tasty-trippy guitar moments on “It'll Never Happen Again” took this bluesy-jazzy fave from her debut down a bit of a Curtis Mayfield path, adding micro-doses of psychedelic “wah-wah” in for good measure.

They encored with her signature cover of Jerry Herman’s classic “I Am What I Am.” Magnificent as ever, their slowed down arrangement lets you savor the power of every word of this important anthem as no other.

I’ll try to post a video clip of that moment below but not sure if BlueSky permits that yet (its on my FB and IG — @dynovoice — pages).

It was great seeing fellow Blackbird fan-friend DJ Rotten Robbie who opened the show (as well as in LA and Napa on this mini tour) with a fine set of vintage and Northern Soul-flavored sides (and bringing the audience much joy with his trademark mirror-ball necklace give-aways, which you can see us wearing in the lower right photo of the collage here).

I think everyone in the audience was feeling the energy and love all around, a good-vibing, healing evening of passionate music, a reprieve from our current strange daily days. Even the late start time didn’t matter for most of us…

We appreciate the speakers who attended Noisepop's first ever SF Music Week Industry Summit and for diagnosing the trajectory of SF so on point, and KQED for taking the time to write this article
Is San Francisco’s Music Industry ‘So Back’? It Depends Who You Ask

With artists scraping by, the economy of managers and booking agents around them shrinks as well, La Doña pointed out. Small venues, too, are struggling. Waz, who books shows at Kilowatt in the Mission District, said he’s seen at least 10 close in the past two years.

A possible solution? Government subsidies, philanthropic funding and corporate sponsorship for artists and venues, several speakers suggested. Waz shouted out the Market Street Arts program, a collaboration between the Office of Economic and Workforce Development and a private foundation, as a model for paying artists to perform at free community events, as well as recent city-funded SF Live concerts in parks and public spaces.

For many of the speakers, bolstering San Francisco’s music scene is so much more than making the city a hospitable place for big stars to stop by on tour. It’s about nurturing the creativity of upstart artists and small venues that are their proving grounds, so that new music can emanate from the city’s stages, sidewalks and speakers for generations to come.

“There isn’t much of a career to rely on unless you get a song in a Walmart ad. That said, I’ve had time to reevaluate why I do it. I think being on tour, having a good tour, always reignites that flame in me,” she said, adding how the band felt “very welcome” during its short stop in the city. “Hopefully, I’ll get to come back soon to enjoy Golden Gate Park,” Howerton said. “And ride a Waymo.” — Silas Valentino, SFGATE travel editor

"Growing up in the suburbs of Dublin, Flynn learnt traditional instruments like the flute and tin whistle; he now incorporates his folksy roots with electronica and post-punk to create a unique Irish musical style." thank you Juhi Gupta and SF/Arts for the love
From "Derry Girls" to "Say Nothing", the last few years have seen a flurry of popular media defining to new audiences the complex history and culture of Ireland, from the Gaeltacht to the Troubles. Folk singer-songwriter John Francis Flynn is taking his own spin on the matter: he gave up a gig playing stereotypical Irish music on a Disney cruise ship to tell the true story of his native country through sonorous compositions tackling themes of national identity and anti-capitalism. Growing up in the suburbs of Dublin, Flynn learnt traditional instruments like the flute and tin whistle; he now incorporates his folksy roots with electronica and post-punk to create a unique Irish musical style.

one of our local band night made the news and we are losing it
“There’s a cyclone, and you guys are still here,” Magaña yelled gratefully at one point, referencing the storm outside. But their set’s sweetest moment was certainly the very calm, very safe mosh pit — delighted 20-somethings jumped around, surprising the singer onstage. She interrupted her song to joke, “Don’t kill anyone, all right!” A few of the most excited dancers wore Magaña’s self-designed merch — she’d later call them “the best homies in the world.” — Stephen Council, SFGATE tech reporter
