Just booked tickets for the 4K restoration of EVIL DEAD 2 in October. It's time my daughter experienced this classic on the big screen. It's going to be groovy. Can't wait.

I usually focus on the positive about the books I've read, but this line made me unreasonably angry when I read it last night.
Highlighted section from book:

"I think I'm out of ammunition," Rachel says. Pete hands her the nine-millimeter and she sets down the shotgun, which has served its Chekhovian purpose.

Spent the last two evenings learning about Rob Delaney's son Henry and just basking in the joy and heartache of A HEART THAT WORKS. It's been a long time a book has reduced me to tears. I wish Delaney never had to write such a book, but I'm thankful he did.
I'm holding a copy of A HEART THAT WORKS by Rob Delaney.

This aired nine years ago yesterday. This line alone gave me chills, let alone what came next. Still the absolute best.

Cruise seems only interested in making popcorn movies (though DIGGER seems like an interesting sidestep), but the culture has shifted so much that I think it'll be impossible for DoT2 to get out the other side unscathed. I mean, look at Randy Quaid responding to the announcement...

This might be one of my favorite Reddit posts.
A Reddit post from the Whatthismovie subreddit:

An attractive man kisses an attractive woman

I saw this movie some years ago and there was an attractive man who kisses an attractive woman in one scene and then in another scene they were arguing. The man had dark hair and was good-looking, like actor-handsome, if that makes sense, and the woman had blonde hair and was very pretty, like celeb-level gorgeous, if that makes sense. Im also pretty sure that the man said something like "I love you so much" to her after the kiss and she reciprocated with a similar "love you, too." They seemed like they could actually be in love, the kiss was so passionate, but maybe they were just good actors, and the fight seemed believable too, but i cant remember the actual context of the argument, just that they were really upset with each other, and there may have been crying, by one, or both, characters, but there may not have been, im not entirely sure. The movie seemed newish, but not too new, but also not too old, Id say it was made sometime between the 1990s and the 2010s and it was at least 5 years ago that I saw it. Im thinking the film was either PG or PG13 but it could have been rated R but I dont remember anything in it that would make it restricted, but then again I dont really remember much of it at all. It was definitely a romance/drama but also had comedic elements. Any help with this would be great! Thanks!

"It’s a love letter to all myths – even the ones we haven’t invented yet. It’s a book about stories and storytelling. It’s about everything, really – a remarkable accomplishment in 303 pages."
A copy of Nick's MORE ARGONAUTS: ANOTHER ARGONAUTICA sitting on top of my trusty copy of CLASSICAL MYTHGOLOGY IN LITERATURE, ART, AND MUSIC by Philip Mayerson.MORE ARGONAUTS: ANOTHER ARGONAUTICA is an astonishing book – it’s not just unlike anything Nick has written, it’s unlike anything I’ve read before. It’s colorful and dense, filled with rich detail and twists and turns. It’s at times laugh-out-loud funny, and other times unexpectedly heartbreaking. It’s a rich journey that is as life-changing for the reader as it is for (some of) its characters.

The real delight is how personal MORE ARGONAUTS: ANOTHER ARGONAUTICA is. Just as Heracles’ children are on a journey to confront their absent father, Nick is on a journey to confront mythology itself – how it influenced his writing, impacted the lives of those he loved, and shaped who he is.

Sometimes the answers are lyrical and poetic, and other times harsh: “I’m a person just like you, is all I’m saying. We’re adults here. What did you expect? Advice and encouragement and hugs and apologies? Naaaah. We’re adults here. I’m not gonna bullshit you.”

MORE ARGONAUTS: ANOTHER ARGONAUTICA is about the search for sunlight when you’re trapped in the shadow of those who came before you. It’s about meeting the damaged lunatics who most people see as legendary heroes. It’s about getting out from under the weight of all the stories you’ve been told so that you can start writing your own story. How far would you go to escape the gravity of your past so that you can propel yourself to your future?

It’s a love letter to all myths – even the ones we haven’t invented yet. It’s a book about stories and storytelling. It’s about everything, really – a remarkable accomplishment in 303 pages.

MORE ARGONAUTS: ANOTHER ARGONAUTICA is easily Nick’s best book. You need to read it.

I always liked de Camp for publishing a limited edition run (348 copies) of the Necronomicon back in 1973. I had the chance to see one of them at the USF rare books library back in the 90s. The book mostly plays it straight, with some sly winks here and there.

Here's where I am with the Stephen King library that I've been putting together for the last few years. The books have taken over an entire corner of my office and are organized by publication order (with some liberties here). At a glance, I have almost everything he's written in hardcover.

I've been really fascinated by the early Polish publishers of Stephen King's books post-1989 and the decisions they made. Take, for instance, Phantom Press's choice to use NIGHTBREED poster art for the cover of FIRESTARTER.
The cover for FIRESTARTER. The cover is a flipped version of the NIGHTBREED movie poster.

If I understand it right, Phantom Press was the second publisher to get the rights to publish King's books in Poland. This is the first edition of FIRESTARTER, as published in 1992.

And I got another invitation from another book club. More has been written about this book in the last two hours than in the 17 years since it was published. "Thank you for creating a book that approaches emotion and introspection with such care and sincerity." No, THANK YOU, AI!
Your book, Empty Rooms, Lonely Countries, has been recommended within our community as a deeply reflective and emotionally resonant work. Readers were particularly drawn to the book’s quiet intensity and contemplative tone, as well as its ability to evoke solitude, longing, and inner landscapes with clarity and restraint. The writing feels intimate and observant, inviting readers into moments of stillness that linger well beyond the page.

One of the many things I love about this AI-generated invitation to feature one of my books in an online book club is how the AI describes it based solely on the title.
As we curated our upcoming featured selection, Empty Rooms Lonely Countries immediately stood out.

Your book’s introspective exploration of solitude, emotional distance, and the landscapes both internal and external that define loneliness is deeply resonant. Its reflective tone and emotional precision invite readers to slow down and sit with difficult, often unspoken feelings. This is exactly the kind of work our community connects with most. We would be delighted to feature Empty Rooms Lonely Countries as our Monthly Book Selection beginning 16 January.

Here's what I love about the JAWS franchise: In JAWS, the shark attacks the father. In JAWS 2, the shark attacks his children. In JAWS 3-D, the shark attacks the now adult children. In JAWS 4, the shark attacks the mother. The last movie's tagline? This time it's personal.

I found this old piece I wrote on the Halloween weekend of 1999. I was visiting my friend in DC, and we went out drinking (pretty much all I did during those years). Here's how the piece ended...
Jenny tells me she is going to stay after closing, leaving me to fend for myself in a city I hardly know. She gives me the key to her place and tells me she needs some time alone. I know she’s lying. Earlier, I saw Jenny making out with God.

I know it’s not really her, but Jenny wearing a mask, and it really wasn’t God, but a bartender wearing a mask. And here I am, wearing this mask, drinking this beer, trying to make sense of it all because, what? I’m lonely? Or maybe I’m scared I’ll overthink my way into a more miserable timeline?

I made it back to Jenny’s place inside one of those accelerated blurs that make you nervous the next day. I remember talking to the taxi driver about something dreadfully important. I remember looking out the window at the city, the glow of an orange haze, with people in masks fading into shadows.

I don’t know which one of me had these thoughts or memories. I don’t know which one of me passed out on the couch. I don’t know which one of me opened the door for Jenny when she came home around dawn.

I don’t even know which one of me is writing this.

I can’t seem to keep track of me anymore.

It’s okay, though. For the next forty-eight hours or so, we can all afford to lose ourselves. We can wear as many masks and be as many people as we want.

But come Monday, when Halloween has passed, what excuse will we have then?

When I was a kid, my mother played this album all the time. I hated it. With the anniversary of her passing approaching, I wanted to have this album for myself. I managed to find it at a music shop in Germany. Now, of course, I love the music. I'd let her play it all the time again if I could.
