iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

I backed these way back in March and they finally arrived yesterday. If I start leveling up, you’ll know why. If I don’t, well… I may have to search within myself 😭 Talking yesterday about compulsively collecting books! Um… 🙃

A stack of Volumes 1-9 of the spectacularly colourful How To Think When You Draw with Lorenzo! books

Everyone under the age of 20 has grown up with webcomics being mostly for free. (Patreon subscribers are all older with credit cards, yes?) Newly built apartments in cities are increasingly tiny with no room for ’stuff’ so… Digital is no doubt the future. Am I wrong in seeing a potential problem?

I heard this about genAI/LLMs the other day “don’t use it for things you aren’t willing to lose” which 💡explains the mentality of many authors and musicians using AI art for covers. The AI fliers. Artists using it to write. They never had it to lose Empathy glasses for the short sighted please 🤓

Saw Forgotten Island. I want to see it again to soak up the details. There’s so much going on in it! The characters, action, and world building wrapped around a big beautiful heart. And in 3D too. Nobody does 3D better than Dreamworks If you’re on the fence, jump! Go! Spread the joy 🎥🤯🫠😁

New Darkwing Duck? More ads? Excuse my Australian but, Yeah… nah.

Darkwing Ducks stands above St Canard ready to serve dark justice on evil-doers. An image from the new Disney+ reboot, now with more ads! Coming soon to shareholders meetings soon. (Parody image. Or is it??)

The local comic store does sketch cover evenings occasionally on Sunday. Dropped by for an hour last night to draw on the new Archie no.1 It’s a great read too. 😁

Archie comics blank sketch cover drawn on by cartoonist Caanan Grall. Archie is yawning in attempt to put his arms around both Betty and Veronica at the same time. He is in Reggie’s way and Jughead is blissfully gorging on Betty’s popcorn

Roughs vs Inks comparison. Sometimes you gotta take a second look to take out the unnecessary stuff and focus on the drama of your character, Ms Cheng, psyching herself up to go back to teaching 4th grade for another year.

Rough layout of a panel from the comic strip, Max Overacts, showing the creator eventually making better composition choices by taking out unnecessary details and upping the drama. If he got it right the first time, you wouldn’t be seeing this and he’d get more sleep.

Happy #KidLitArtPostcard day! I’m a comic artist (and writer) on my own Eisner-nominated webcomic, Max Overacts. I like to make bright (I’m colourblind) funny ‘middle ages’ focused comics (10-13yo). No rep Comic here: occasionalcomics.com/comic/latest... Folio here: caanangrall.com

Max Overacts comic from creator Caanan Grall introducing the character of Laurielle briefly to the comic and the lake in a vain attempt to get paid work because life is hard and his wife works harder. If you’ve read the alt text, I salute you! Everybody pees in the lake, not everyone makes a comic about it.

I’ve not shared this one here so I will now!

Cartoon of the artist at his drawing board, straining to think of ideas just like he strains to take a dump. Suddenly his brain pops right out of his head and it’s just what the doctor (definitely did not) order so he squishes it right onto the page then proudly shows us all his inspirational genius. Then he dies. His ghost tells him he needs an editor. The moral: Imagination is necessary for life. By Caanan Grall

It’s been years since I’ve been part of the regular Wednesday set but I recently had to pull all my longboxes out of storage, which got me to the local comic store and imagining I had disposable income for a day 😊

Four covers to new comics on Wednesday September 2nd, 2026. Prima Apparata. No Gods No Masters. Legion of Superheroes, and Doom Patrol. All issue 1s. Bagged and boarded for the complete fastidious nerd experience.

Latest Line It Is Drawn is up at CBR, redesigning villains to fit the world of the Caped Crusader cartoon. I did Mystique www.cbr.com/batman-caped...

Illustration of X-Men villain Mystique redesigned to fit the aesthetic of the Batman Caped Crusader cartoon, whom she stands next to. Just reading along and suddenly this shows up. This part of the book is set in 1961. A trope so bad it can be used anachronistically (although it IS a book involving time travel)

Passage from the novel Atomic Anna by Rachel Barenbaum, highlighting the sentence, “Atomic Anna was never beaten or thrown into refrigerators like female characters in other comic books” in reference to the name given to a trope of using the death of female characters to motivate male heroes (by stuffing them in fridges) based on a 90s Green Lantern comic

Cartoon depicting a parody of The Twelve Labours of Hercules, but Batman instead, drawn in a hastily rendered, completely childish Greek style. Those labours are listed as follows: brooding, detecting, playing boy, mentoring, hooking grapples, seducing cat ladies, tossing villains, CEO-ing, grimacing, intimidating, repelling sharks, and trolling (with a letter written to Superman stating “Dear Clark, Kryptonite has no effect on me, love Bruce.”

Comic makers! Anyone else ever write into their favourite comics back in the day? Mask Strikes Back 5 was published in 1995. I’d have been a pimply faced 16yo with bad hair when I sent this in, all the way from Australia. I also had a letter printed in Books of Magic annual 1

Drawing of Dark Horse Comics’s the Mask (saying “Wow! I got letters!”), drawn on an envelope, printed in the letters page from “The Mask Strikes Back #5” Fan art by Caanan Grall, June 1995

Cover to The Mask Strikes Back #5 by Arcudi, Mahnke & Williams, Dark Horse, 1995. A bad guy with a half-burned, scarred face is pulling his bandaged hand back in a fist, ready to punch.
