'Reading for pleasure – from tucking into a Jane Austen classic to devouring a Heartstopper graphic novel – is linked to better mental health, greater empathy and a lower risk of dementia, say researchers.' Just make sure it's not reading English (instead of science) at university, say ministers.

It's just weird isn't it when the British Museum is running a sold-out exhibition, when The Odyssey reports $1billion at the box office, when the V&A has just opened the most innovative and accessible museum model in Europe....and this is what our minister for research comes out with.

It’s ages since I’ve taught it, but I *think* Oswald’s illness isn’t specifically named in Ibsen’s Ghosts (although there are lots of heavy hints that it’s hereditary syphilis)? Maybe this example is too ‘plot-relevant‘ for your purposes though …

Gorgeous post-eclipse sunset at Watchet (didn‘t capture the big event itself!)

Managed to catch the final weekend of the William Nicholson exhibition at Pallant House. Much as I love Nicholson’s later paintings, I adore his earlier graphic work, like these woodcut prints of Queen Victoria and (my personal fave) Sarah Bernhardt. #19thCentury #art
A print showing Queen Victoria as an older woman, dressed in black, with a dog at her side.A print showing the 19th century actress Sarah Bernhardt standing with her arms spread open in front of a theatre curtain.

The current debacle in British universities has multiple causes, but a simple, partial remedy for the disastrous Tory removal of student number caps was for Labour to reverse it. They didn't, and they will reap the economic consequences at a local level across the country.
