This bit about conflicts of interest is not a gotcha I had thought about before. Having your dependant child holding spacex stock if your job involves making decisions about spacex contracts could get real sticky if you can't divest for five years

Makes feel like a chump putting all that energy into making sure my effort was being spent for the benefit of everyone, regardless of where they lived, who they voted for, or how repellant I found their personal politics to be. That was my job, that was my oath, and it was, is the right thing to do

Biden admin: directed the vast majority of IRA spending to GOP states. That's where much of the pain was, so that's where federal support was most needed, despite politics or childish slogans Trump: if they didn't vote for me, you can bomb them, idgaf These things are not the same

“Build with not for” is a civic tech mantra that emphasized that the work was about partnering with agencies who had deep subject matter expertise. USDS and 18F were able to eventually earn trust that they weren’t techbro know-it-alls coming to muscle out career employees.

People-centered, not tech centered: focus on the outcomes people experience not which toys you want to play with Government is not a business: companies pick and choose profitable customers, governments have an obligation to serve everyone, particularly when it seems inefficient to do so

I think people reach for medicare because there is *so* much variation in medicaid from state to state: huge waitlists for HCBS in Texas, for example, and iirc territories are funded by block grants not entitlements, although I don't know if medicare is any better there www.kff.org/medicaid/sta...

"Regardless of one’s views of work requirements, there should be broad support for preventing them from encouraging gambling." No actually, some philanthropists should set up a site to generate these "incomes" by "loaning" people the money to place the "bets".

The real fraud, waste, and abuse is Citizens United. The people Trump pushed out of the government weren't wasting money, they were getting in the way of the grift. Remember as you read this: the money being talked about is your money, money being stolen by corporations as "smart business"

gender bias in medicine is a terrible thing, but do not hope that a system trained on data generated by a biased system will somehow erase that bias. It is more likely to encode it, and in doing so, camouflage that bias with a gloss of false objectivity pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

"similar or worse" that's the whole point: they are defining what is better or worse in a particular way that makes the AI look good, but may be hiding terrible outcomes "lies, damned lies, and statistics" and I'm quoting that as someone with an MIT stats education and much professional experience

If the AI failures included missing a cancer, or some fatal but rare metabolic illness, simply because "the flu" is more common, that is a bad thing even if guessing "the flu" first is right 60% of the time.

How did they define "better"? Two of the measures were: percent of final diagnosis ranks first, and lowest cost to final diagnosis. Sadly not all diagnoses are equal. If the doctors were taking longer or spending more to rule out a catastrophic illness, I kinda want that, don't you?
