Christian Rodriguez Perez (@c-rp.bsky.social) found fate, quantity, and species impacted desire to reduce the number of animals used in #research. Did Dariusz Miękisz find a #sideEffect effect on consent validity? At low levels of blame for being less informed #consent consequences mattered. #ELSI

New in #animalethics: Persson, @c-rp.bsky.social, Louis-Maerten, @nicodmueller.bsky.social, and Shaw of the Institute for Biomedical Ethics at @unibas.ch explore the ethics of killing in animal research and the #3Rs. 🧵 link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Lastly 🇨🇭 Transparency in animal experimentation: Swiss laws inform the public about aspects like species and severity, but key info on e.g. surplus animals and funding is missing. This article explores how legal updates could fill these gaps. www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/14...

It is argued that ethical xenotransplantation could require genetic pain disenhancement in pigs. In this commentary we advocate for prioritizing alternatives and highlight the importance of considering non-sentientist harms. jme.bmj.com/content/50/1...

Prioritisation and non-sentientist harms: reconsidering xenotransplantation ethics
Rodger et al have interestingly argued that xenotransplantation should, if possible, entail the use of genetic pain disenhancement to prevent otherwise unavoidable pain in ‘donor’ animals.1 Their argu...

Back to Swiss law: "Switzerland has one of the strictest law regarding animal welfare" - you may have heard this many times to argue that all is fine for animals in 🇨🇭 In this paper with @nicodmueller.bsky.social we call this the Ranking Argument and we discuss its flaws. leoh.ch/article/view...

The previous paper also discusses conflicts between the Rs leading to sacrificial dilemmas. Here we present an approach to shed light on stakeholders’ decision-making in such dilemma using Experimental Bioethics - #bioxphi. Swiss-based study already underway! link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Modern definitions of the #3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine) tend to depart from Russell & Burch’s original ones. What about Swiss law? 🇨🇭 In this paper we highlight discrepancies, including the notion of an “evolutionary scale” to rank animal models. altex.org/index.php/al...

📣 New publication! Most animals used in research are also killed. The traditional 3Rs framework (Replace, Reduce, Refine) focuses solely on decreasing distress while ignoring the harm of death itself. This needs to change. link.springer.com/article/10.1...
