That’s awesome! Great development & advocacy work from you there 😊

I think Bluesky (and others) flag a post as “from archive” or similar when the createdAt time is a long time from “now” (to offer weak signal if people are faking old records). This is a useful feature sometimes, but could never be handled from backfill from zero in the same way as live!

Love it! Sent up ☺️ I’m worried this question get skewed low results though, as this looks like it’s already at max!
Question “How do you feel about the AT Protocol overall?” But “best thing on the internet” (max) is left aligned so it looks like the selected number (5/10) is “best thing on the internet”

Oh wow, so you can resell Cloudflare tunnels for $0 cost? That’d be very neat! I don’t see how you’d route non-OAuth traffic though? How does an /xrpc/getBlob call find its way to a PDS in that case?

JP @byjp.me · 30/09/2026
I figure Tranquil would be the best bet for this PDS, given how it can run natively on steam machines (no node runtime eating resources in the background) …but we’d have to wait for their in-process DB, definitely wouldn’t want to be running Postgres on every steam machine 😵

JP @byjp.me · 30/09/2026
Huh, I had no idea! Thanks! I could handle one-off costs, it’s the ongoing ones, especially the ones that scale linearly with user number, that’d bite this project hard. I’m not familiar with the Steam Datagram Relay, so I think step 1 would be a chat with Steam anyway.

JP @byjp.me · 30/09/2026
Oh interesting! Are you able to share the kind of rate it’d be? How do you handle the upload limit of 200MB for pro?

My day, and the month, is drawing to a close here in the East of the world… But September’s not over until it’s over! You have just a few more hours to buy your domains at marque.at, and get @marque.at, @chris.pardy.family and I to donate to charity on your behalf! $475 + whatever you buy now…

Unless we paid for business Tailscale ($$$!) that’d be pretty far from the zero-tech-knowledge setup I’d want, sadly 😔 But we can do this, I think!
110
JP @byjp.me · 30/09/2026
Downside is we’d be paying for ingress/egress for every PDS request, so we’d probably have to charge for this “game” to make it sustainable if it grew, plus infrastructure to manage!
110
JP @byjp.me · 30/09/2026
Exactly! My current plan would be to have a gateway service which accepts inbound connections from the steam machines over Steam Datagram Relay (we’d know your steam id as part of that), holds them open, then routes PDS requests to them from a central <some mapped id>.pds.coolname.com

The email telling me, in detail, why my *blog’s* repo would be “adopted by hundreds, maybe thousands” of developers because of its “clear high value in modern CI environments” was an especially comic one.

We had these in our kitchen at Deliveroo, they’re even worse for that, you can’t get your elbows even a little out to the site so you can eat 😅

JP @byjp.me · 30/09/2026
Got any ideas for how we’d give a steam machine(’s PDS) a stable external domain? I can only think of ways that involve running infrastructure (a dynamic DNS, or traffic relay type setup) which isn’t great for sustainability or decentralisation, but may be the only choice!

I posted on your journal post but … I just bought one and would totally join a Steam Machine PDS team! (There *has* to be a punny name for that) 10 foot management UI, always on backend, log in with steam account; only hard bit is coordinating the hope punching!

I may have just bought one myself… i think we need to build a Steam Machine PDS team 😄

Will do! Mostly having to account-switch to check for messages means I haven’t 😅 this has already been great! Layout on mobile is a bit funky tho! The tab menu bar makes the rest of the page zoom & pan
Tab bar of laurels.rest for ing the rest of the page to be tiny

Oh weird, that wasn’t it; I had a failure on my first log in attempt, to a Bsky PDS account (I was told “log in didn’t start in this browser”, though it definitely did), then I was prevented from Eurosky accounts until I refreshed the page. Works now tho! 🙇‍♂️

Resting Laurels (laurels.rest) is an app that lets you manage all your alts Post, dm, gm, like, follow, etc. You account logins are saved under a single handle so you can access all your alts at home or on the go. We also support account sharing, in case there's more than one of you.

What's the one thing your podcast host doesn't do that would actually make you switch? Not a nice-to-have, but the thing you've complained about out loud more than once. Building in the open, would rather solve real problems than invented ones.

For every domain you buy this month I’m donating £1 to help rebuild Venezuela after the earthquakes. My in-laws’ homes survived with only a little damage, but so many people lost everything. I’m sure you have an idea in need of a domain nestling away somewhere, marque.at is the place to get it!

If you decide to go further, I’d be interested to see how it compares (speed, accuracy &RAM-wise) to emojify.byjp.me! It uses a text embedding only and the looks for the minimal distance from words associated with emoji from the Unicode descriptions) — I think what you’re building could be faster!

Made a Printer Friend which quickly transcribes speech onto little slips of paper. Very nice for card sorts, quickly capturing open loops, discursive notes in books, etc. The speed of thermal printers and their auto-cutters is so satisfying! And dedicated mechanical key! Mm!

You're constrained by PDS limits though, right? (fwiw, I built atfs.dev to scratch this itch for myself; self-hosted IPFS with atproto admin/upload — so I could host the ~300MB .img files for running itself on a Raspberry Pi! atfs.dev/manage/stora...)
