I’d also say that the earlier they know what they have in net, the better. Is Fowler actually ready right now? It’d be great to know that esp. since Monty will be UFA.

When Marty says he doesn’t know goaltending, you understand why it’s like this. I’m not sure he knows defending either 🤣

Maybe mild surprise? Might be injury, might be management has a POV they aren’t sharing publicly. It was never in stone that a mercurial guy like Dobeš would be given rope if he didn’t lock in from jump; whoever is playing well will get the net regardless of history or contract. Not like Dmen 😂😂😂

Honestly I think management is happy to give Fowler every opportunity in the NHL regardless, it’s the only position where “true” competition for spots is happening

True about Nikishin, I guess it comes back to what the contractual asks are. To me the team is far from competing - I said last year they were a paper tiger & that was confirmed. Lots of areas still need help including LD.

I think the team have taken a “fog of war” approach to injury reporting 🤪 next we’ll find out Kapanen is on LTIR & they just haven’t told anybody

Happy for Struble, and as a fan it’s correct too.

I miss Claude “I fix things” Julien. Actual hockey tactics might be a thing. We’re seeing the limits of a coach who has little to say at this point beyond “play the game in front of you” while he pulls goalies too early #GoHabsGo

There’s a reasonable argument that the use of the Common Crawl as the original training data, and the subsequent release of open weight models trained on that data, resulted in a common good that mitigates (to a degree) the alleged theft involved in the CC itself. That origin story matters too imo

Oh we see both points very differently. Esp. as far as “proven product” in my view you have it backwards. But it’s alright that we differ here, i mean it’s certainly arguable that LD isn’t as pressing as a potential 2C. Half the league needs a centre, that much is true 😁

Yeah, Matheson, Hage & whatever for Ed. Easy call for a top 2/3 guy on a team with a gaping hole the top 4. IMO he’s a stud & easily worth our best prospect+

If I were HuGo I’d be wondering if a Hage-Edvinsson deal was possible & how much Matheson might consider Detroit as his next home

Seeing the coach say this makes me unhopeful as a fan. What about their wobbly process & consistently average results? That’s demoralizing af to read as a fan. He’s not there to be a dad, his job is “win games” and he’s contributing to the unforced errors on his own.

Let’s say this line sticks. (It probably should.) What’s the plan for the top 6? Bolduc on the second line with Kapanen & Demidov?

You’re right of course, except there is a big picture from year to year. I’m questioning why there seems to be little to no progress fixing stuff that was a problem this time last year. Maybe it was just a rough start?

The original thoroughbred of hockey. @bwoar.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Again, you make a great point albeit a different one. One or two game events, yes, debatable and credit the other team. But it’s *also* the same team playing the same way with the same habits as a whole year ago…Did progress stall? How can the team improve on their play style? It’s fair to ask, IMO
210
The original thoroughbred of hockey. @bwoar.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I don’t disagree with your point, but how do you see the whole picture? It sure seems like mistakes aren’t being fixed and “smart” players are still stuck in bad habits a lot of the time.

At least the PP time should’ve been cut, that’s basic. Bolduc should’ve been promoted based on performance.

That’s a fair criticism of both player & coach. I don’t trust Marty when it comes to meritocracy at all. But his bias for talent is overall better than, say, overplaying Tom Pyatt or grinders just because of work rate. I think it’s as much a coaching skill issue as it is a player issue.

Bang on for Slaf but without Demi of course he’s gonna try too hard. Coach should arrange lines to compensate for that & instead he’s trusting a kid clearly fighting the puck to start the year. It’s a more fragile group than the track record suggests.

When it’s both your veteran D (Matheson & Dobson) as well as your bottom pair not playing that mature game, it’s not a maturity problem. AB kindly giving the vets & the coach a pass they’ve (mostly) earned, but a nod to the defensive issues globally might’ve belonged here too. What meritocracy??

If I’m Danny Brière, I’m firing Tocchet immediately, finding an AHL or players’ coach to create a safe but disciplined culture, and getting back to properly rebuilding. Last year was BS & they should’ve been tanking. The failed OS sealed their fate for this year & he knows all this.

I would be shocked if Fowler didn’t get the start Thursday for the #Habs and just, surprise, the door for him suddenly popped open. That said, hope Sammy is okay. He’s got more games in him & I think he’ll be called upon this year too.

This is part of what I can’t stomach from this coach. His method has proven limitations & he clearly doesn’t see that. No change since last year’s approach, no lessons learned. Clock’s ticking for MSL, but will he realize it too late? ⏰

Appreciate the #GoHabsGo making it easier to ignore them this season. Lots of other interesting hockey, we can check with the CH again in January to see if they’ve made any progress since October of 2025. Coaching is still suspect 🥸 Watching the ladies on HNIC this season instead, very excited!

this has been pretty eye opening. one game, still early, all that noise. but it feels like the canadiens aren’t a 2c away from being at the canes’ level. they are a fundamental shift in the way they approach their game away from being peers with carolina. last year wasn’t close. this isn’t close.

Agreed 100% on all points, Av and these things were obvious weak points going into *last* season. HuGo seem content to avoid reckoning there for the moment. Once the personnel issues are deemed sufficiently solved though… one hopes the coaches’ work will be scrutinized more intently.

I’m wondering just how much 14 + 13 can really, actually make this happen. So yeah for me, personnel. 10% coaching maybe. Despite all they’ve been through, the team hasn’t actually learned. Are the leaders on the ice capable of leading in a way that makes those 2nd periods rare, instead of normal?
110
The original thoroughbred of hockey. @bwoar.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
If they really thought it was a problem, it’d be fixed by now. Something is off with the accountability of the team. None of the postgame feelings are new, so what’s gonna change before they clean this up? Personnel or coaching?

Yikes. This could’ve been written a dozen or so times last year. This is quite simply Who They Are, last seen accomplishing 9 shots in actual NHL playoff games. We’ll see this year if there really is a “becoming” yet to happen. I think maybe, but there are no guarantees in hockey!

Well, you nailed this one. The defence, the Danault line, Dobeš flopping about, plus Kreider looking good. On to game 3.
