While Götz Kubitschek was billed as a speaker, he did not make it to Steyregg, but his son Wieland Kubitschek did.

The upside of watching football🏈 with NFL Gamepass®: you get the original commentary & see new fast food items before they come to Europe. The downside: you get to see Ken Paxton ads & what I thought was a Milleresque Trump 28 campaign announcement, but turned out to be "Paid by the US Government".

Correction: Kubitschek II. It was hard to catch a glimpse of anything, as the "identitarian" event, much like the "identitarian" worldview, was hermetically sealed, in stark contrast to the counter-event, which was held outdoors and had speeches, great live music, food, and even a bouncy castle.

Last weekend, Austrian "Identitarians" held their annual culture festival at their house project near Linz, headlined by Götz Kubitschek. A local grassroots initiative organized a beautiful counter-event and I was happy to give a speech there. Event recap: steyreggistbunt.at/das-war-das-...

Congratulations to the women of @fk-austria.at on winning the first-ever Vienna football derby, women's edition! The men's version is Europe's longest continuously running city derby. Rapid were particularly late to embrace women's football, which partly explains today's 6–0 defeat.

PS: In the U.S., relations between frats & universities are usually much tighter, which gives schools more leverage to impose sanctions (revoke affiliation, housing rights...). However, it also means they have to account for frat guys among trustees, donors, alums, admin personnel, and faculty. 8/8

The networks of male complicity function particularly well where shared experiences of denigration (hazing), shared liminal experiences (Mensur), or — in more general terms — a culture of not respecting people's boundaries, intimacy, and physical integrity have prepared members for it. 7/8

Bernhard Weidinger @bweidin.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Partaking in bro culture often entails becoming a perpetrator and always entails becoming complicit to some degree by looking the other way, covering up, downplaying, or justifying acts of violence. "You have your brother’s back, no matter what." "You don’t rat your bro out." "Bros b4 h**s." etc 6/8

Bernhard Weidinger @bweidin.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Both German & "Greek" frats self-define as “brotherhoods": refuges for "real" (anachronistic) masculinity and families that reproduce, generation after generation, seemingly without female interference (of course, masculinity very much needs female objects in order to reproduce as a concept). 5/8

Bernhard Weidinger @bweidin.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
While rape and promiscuity are, obviously, two very different things, the very notion that women are but tokens to be used by men for pleasure and status is a breeding ground for male violence. That's what rape culture is about — which is, in turn, enabled by and deeply baked into bro culture. 4/8

Bernhard Weidinger @bweidin.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
While there are frats in the U.S. that value academic achievement, the classic “Bad Neighbors” type more heavily favors binge drinking, athletic prowess, and having “game” as markers of masculinity. Non-homosocial partying and promiscuity seem to play a bigger role for male status among 🇺🇸 frats. 3/8

Bernhard Weidinger @bweidin.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The masculinity embraced by German “Burschenschaften” centers on soldierly values: honor, “fatherland” (German ethnicity), the readiness to fight, and sacrifice. The key ritual in which that masculinity is performed and reproduced is the traditional student fencing (“Mensur”). 2/8

In 2022, I conducted research at Northwestern on how American college fraternities compare to their 🇩🇪/🇦🇹 counterparts. Masculinity plays a key role in any all-male organization, but what is regarded as ideal masculinity differs. A couple of thoughts on the #Cornell57. 🧵 1/8 CN: sexualized violence.

Archless Vienna apparently not included, either. Sad! Or even Berlin, considering the Brandenburg gate is indeed a triumphal monument, but technically... well, a gate, not an arch.

The Jewish Community in Austria (IKG), on their part, have so far given no indication they are ready to move away from their long-standing no-contact policy vis-à-vis the FPÖ. Whatever "turning point" Likud & company may be at right now, the Austrian Jewry doesn't seem to be joining them. 9/9

Bernhard Weidinger @bweidin.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
My reading on the situation is that we're not looking at an actual normalization of FPÖ-Israel relations yet, but rather at yet another instance of Likud pushing for it. With elections upcoming in Israel, it might be worth noting that a Likud-less government might view things quite differently. 8/9

The refusal to follow Kickl on this is unsurprising: most of them, plain and simple, hate Israel; they reject the notion of a special 🇦🇹/🇩🇪 responsibility for Jewish life today; and while K embraced Holocaust education in his speech, they want to end it, viewing it as a hindrance to "remigration". 7/9

Bernhard Weidinger @bweidin.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
The reactions I've seen so far from the extra-parliamentary extreme right in 🇦🇹 & 🇩🇪 are, by and large, decidedly negative, be it the "New Right", "alternative media", or neo-Nazis. Leading pundits express "bitter disappointment" in Kickl for buying into Israel support and "the cult of guilt". 6/9

Knesset member Ariel Kellner, who was in attendance in Strasbourg, highlighted the common ground Likud and PfE find in "the struggle between civilization and barbarism". Or, to put it more bluntly: in anti-Muslim racism. 5/9

Bernhard Weidinger @bweidin.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Imho, Kickl's speech is remarkable not bc it marked a departure from the Strache era, but bc he had so far given the impression that lobbying for a "kosher stamp", like Strache had done quite emphatically, was beneath him. I'd put this down as an advance concession to a future coalition partner. 4/9

For Israeli Minister Amichai Chikli (Likud), the Strasbourg event marked a "historic turning point in the relationship between Austria's Freedom Party, the State of Israel and the Jewish people". Chikli hailed the speech given by FPÖ chairman Herbert Kickl as particularly significant. 3/9

In view of increased (self-)isolation and a situation in which considerable parts of the global left want to see Israel wiped off the map, the country's far-right government has been turning to new allies for some time now. In 2025, Likud became a "Patriots for Europe" observer member. 2/9
