which is kinda a cool idea for a movie, but that's also where I can't help but compare it to, funnily enough, "Nope", which is also an alien-themed dark comedy action horror movie (also has horses!) where we never really learn much about why aliens are there

just in general the plot of the movie is almost like a dark joke. It's essentially an alien invasion movie, but one where main characters are just idiots from a small town and they never even learn what's actually going on. They're basically background characters in a bigger plot we never learn

it's just so paradoxical to watch some of the best directed action scenes ever, and think to yourself "wow, if it wasn't for the technical side of things, I would not care for any of this".

it's also not all that interesting plot-wise. The characters aren't well developed or compelling. Most of them are just there to die horribly and I legit lost track of all the darkhaired Korean men with rifles who kept popping up out of nowhere only to end up becoming fodder

Unfortunately, some of the bad Bay qualities are also here. The movie has some obnoxious comedy, and a whole bunch of annoying characters. It's also so bloody long. Every single scene just goes on forever it seems

which is why I am glad to say that FINALLY someone figured out how to do Bayhem as well as Bay does. "Hope" is like a much smaller Michael Bay Transofmers film, but with all the adrenaline and grotesque beauty of his action in place

which is why it sucks that no one is able to do it as well as him, but also do it in a film that doesn't have all the crap that makes Michael Bay movies so unwatchable: awful plots, awful unlikable characters, awful comedy, racism, misogyny, the general cynicism hatred towards people

here's a confession I have: I hate Michael Bay movies. All of them. Even the ones that people say are "good". Yet I gotta admit one thing: he is incredible at staging complex, layered CGI action spectacle that feels absolutely gigantic

here's why I'd say you should see this film: the cinematography, the action set pieces, the set design, the sense of destruction, speed and scale is incredible here. This is where the comparison to Michael Bay movies is pretty apt

I'd say the best way to describe is Michael Bay's Transformers meets Jordan Peele's "Nope", with a dash of Bong Joon Ho's "Host". It's also a bit of a Hulk movie???

because if he doesn't he loses the race. The also make it so that he doesn't have the money needed, so he has to borrow it from a shady lady played by Gillian Anderson, but also the moment she is there she makes it clear they owe her anyway. So again, you might as well give that money as ransom

it also makes a very weird change to the core premise, where Affleck plays a wealthy guy running for mayor, and his victory depends on latino vote, so when someone kidnaps his nanny's son by mistake it's basically made clear that the best option is to pay the ransom

I am watching the new Ben Afflick called "Animals" and wow it's pretty bad. What's weird is that it's a riff on Kurosawa's "High and low" (2nd time an American has done one in the last 2 years) but it doesn't say that it's based on that movie anywhere?
