I recommend the Harmony Guides! There are two volumes just of crochet and then more of knitting etc. The photos are good, the instructions are clear, there are good charts so you can compare and learn to work from a chart. It says pub. 2008 but I learned from these in the 70s.

This squirrel sounds like he smokes a pack a day and wants you to get off his lawn. (Sound at about 8 seconds). He sits here outside my kitchen window and yells until I come to say hello.

I don't let my black cat out at night on Halloween (or any other night) because they are impossible to find under the neighbor's bushes in the dark.

Sometimes you just gotta draw something silly. This alien would like to paint you.
Messy watercolor of a mantis-inspired alien with a weird exposed brain, a clacky beak, a scorpion tail. It is holding a paintbrush at an easel

We used to go in with friends in shares of a pig or cow. Better quality, local farmer. We just don't eat enough meat any more to justify having 125 pounds of beef in the deep freeze.

I grew up in central coastal CA where everyone has a lemon tree in the yard. Iowa was a real hard transition.

You're not gonna get any argument from me here, having more hogs than people is not doing Iowa any good.

We belonged for many years to a co-op farm, and she had hoop houses for lettuces and whatnot. Greens. They still only did the trick til about November. I guess if you were willing to invest in a lot of gro lights and insulated walls? I don't know of any co-ops around here that do, though.

Every year about Feb I go to the local middle eastern restaurant and they have a side dish of lightly pickled red cabbage that makes me practically cry because it's been so long since I had a fresh vegetable 🤣

Can't argue there. Greenhouses only extend the growing season so far when the ground is frozen. But I don't know why we have tomatoes from Mexico instead of Texas or whatever.

Lineth @busylin.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Americans want tomatoes in January. In Iowa I can get local produce of some sort in the summer, but if I want anything besides withered potatoes and storage squash, or whatever I processed for freezing/canning myself between November and June, it's gotta come from somewhere else.

I mean, they are all successful insofar as they are colorful and interesting and someone will love the finished product. But none of these methods so far reproduces what I would do with a piece of fabric.

Experiments in the continuing effort to combine my long-term interest (and business) in tie dye, with my more recent interest in leather work, specifically journal covers because boy howdy do I love a notebook that is pretty to look at and pleasing to touch. So far none of these are winning.

I found the Yom Kippur traditional Poster's Confession really meaningful this year.
We have subtweeted. We have argued in bad faith. We have dogpiled. We have uploaded images with no alt text. We have read the replies of our mutuals without leaving a courtesy like, and we have become irrationally angry when our posts did not get a courtesy like. We have thirsted and we have judged others for their thirst. We have posted bait, and we have taken the bait of others. We have posted cringe, we have been horny on main, we have assumed that someone’s retweet was an endorsement. We have posted things which are true but unkind. We have posted things which are kind but we knew to be false. We have scrolled when we should be sleeping or paying attention to our loved ones. We have replied seriously to a joke. We have strayed from Your good terms & services and it has not made our lives better.

Fun experience tonight: in a restaurant with friends, was approached by a very familiar-looking woman who reminded me excitedly that I taught her to knit, like 17 or 18 years ago. It's especially gratifying because teaching knitting was my favorite job.

Sometimes something happens in dance class that begs to be illustrated.
A monkey mermaid facing the side, with arms held in a downwards facing curve to the front and fish tail curving upwards in back, reminiscent of the shape of the "Barrel of Monkeys" toy. Caption reads, "Expand your abdominal barrel so it will hold more fish-monkeys! But not so much that your pelvic bowl tips out"

Sir Arthur is innocent of any rumors you may have heard about harassing the other cats. He is a sweet innocent angel boy, just look at that face.
A 4 or 5 month old kitten, white with tabby spots, sitting on a cat tree with his front legs folded neatly together. He is looking, wide-eyed, over the photographer's shoulder as if to say, "who, me?"

My horoscope says it's a good day for me to post thirst traps, so here's a martini *and* a water bottle, that's twice as thirsty. Right? Am I doing this right? My resident Youth Expert is asleep.
A green Moroccan-style tea glass holding a martini, and a water bottle covered in stickers. I should probably have a mug of tea out here too.

Latest addition to "weird/cool things in my house": a Bluetooth speaker for the kitchen, built into a previously non-functional Fender amp.
A butter yellow wall with shelves (cat shaped wine bottles, novelty salt & pepper shakers, giant pottery Pokeball), drawers full of pens and ink, assorted clutter, a bread machine, various framed art, and a calendar. In the middle is a shelf made of piano wood holding a small Fender amp.
