Happy to share results of the @bat1kgenomes.bsky.social phase 1, providing reference genomes covering 21 bat families. New insights into bat phylogeny, ancestral genome reconstruction, European origin & ancestral echolocation. Great work by a team of 100+ colleagues www.nature.com/articles/s41...

There are 1,500 scientifically described species of bat in the world, each plays a unique role in the ecosystems where they are found. In the UK we have 18 resident species all of which eat insects. Four of the British mammals at highest risk of extinction are bats. www.bats.org.uk/about-bats/w...

Just now in #NocmigWebinar from @wildlifeacoustics.com to expanding datascience together with bat surveys and citizen science too. Big migrations closer to us throught NFC’s. You won’t go to sleep without knowing one more thing. Looking forward to the new #SongMeter5 units!

Amazing talk by Laura Torrent at our bat group AGM on her work in Equatorial Guinea. Hours of examining bat specimens stored at the Doñana Biological Station (EBD-CSIC), Sevilla, Spain, to analysing field and genetic data from various locations in Equatorial Guinea. 🦇🖤🦇 #bats #batconservation
A close up of Pipistrellus etula, a newly discovered bat species. Opening slide, 'What have we learned about Equatorial Guinea's bats - and what remains a mystery?'

Don't buy 'curiosities' made of dead bats! Online stores including Amazon and Google shop are still openly selling these items, a year after we highlighted the problem. Trade in Endangered species needs to stop. #wildlife #bats #nature 🌍 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

#BREAKINGNEWS 🦇🌍 The world now has 1,500 recognized bat species! 🎉 The global list at www.batnames.org just hit this milestone. New bats are found through fieldwork in remote places & genetic discoveries. Amazing biodiversity news! #Bats #Biodiversity #BatsNeedFriends
A collage of bat photos of species from around the world. Photos are contributions from photographers who have kindly allowed us to use their work for education and conservation. Text reads "Celebrate Bats!" and 1500.

👏Bats 👏Are👏Economically👏IMPORTANT!👏 $3.39-$8/ha - that's the calculated value of bats foraging over rice crops in Mexico. BATS ARE ECONOMICALLY IMPORTANT.🦇🌎🧪🦊 www.sciencedirect.com/.../pii/S016....
Image shows three graphs. To the left o the graph are three pest insect species. Each graph shows the numbers of pests (adults or eggs or pannicles) found per plot on the y-axis and data along the x-axis. Graphed are the numbers observed in excluded zones (no bats) and non-excluded zones (with bats). The numbers of insects are higher in the areas where bats were excluded. Results were significant.
