He does have some credibility when it comes to "will be in literally any movie if you pay in cash," I guess.

This one absolutely baffled me the first time I heard it on the pharmacy line. The phone tree started out identifying itself as automated! Why put in a weird little pretext? Real call centers usually have headsets that screen out that sound, too.

I think that deep down in American culture, across most of the political spectrum, there's a belief that right wing violence is fundamentally legitimate, even if it is scary or undesirable. They're scared of it because they think the right 'gets to do that' on some level, and other people don't.

And the whole point of having resources, money, power, etc., is to use them to get what you want. You have to be almost comically economics-brained to look at someone choosing 'getting what they want' over 'moderately increasing their chances of getting what they want' and call it irrational.

Anthropic isn't just unhappy that people are being mean to its computer program because they believe it's a little guy, it's also because they're using people's interactions with it as training data, right?

We're already seeing random politicians sensing the change in the wind and moving against their own coalitions to oppose it, as well, like with Gingrich and apartheid.

The biggest difference, which I think is what has kept Israel sailing along through apartheid to genocide, is that both of those countries were utterly economically dependent on the black people living there. Israel isn't, which turns out to be a recipe for a bad result.

It's such an obvious lure for urban explorer types that I sometimes wonder if the Parks department isn't quietly maintaining it in order to make sure that they have a safe place to go mess around in.

Calling on people to attack Somali Minnesotans and then adding "If you need, the Federal Government will come to your rescue" is as openly begging for right wing terrorism as it gets.

There was no scenario where there wasn't a war there, even if the North was willing to say "good riddance" to the Southern states. They needed to expand their slave empire, couldn't compete with the North on expansion, and knew it.

I am convinced that tech CEOs believe the appeal of AI is that it will let everyone live a kind of downgraded version of their own lives, and can't make sense of why everyone reacts to descriptions of that with such horror.

It's usually called intuition, but honestly I think it's just a matter of experience in the long run. Life would be easier if it were different but deep down our brains run on quantity. "Now, in our next course you will be doing this for 15 years, and..." is unsatisfying, but...

I'm a big fan of check lists, even for people with a lot of experience, because of how easy it is to accidentally blank out on a step if you've done something a million times. But I'm pretty what you're describing is "being good at a complicated job" and that it usually looks like this.

These things always sound spooky and then I check and it's just a list of things I've bought with "May be a [thing] hobbyist!" It's the same data they use to recommend you buy another bottle of shampoo the day after you bought one. It's as insightful as it would take to generate those results.

It may have been a low point for the US, but the attempted coup on January 6, 2021, did get us one of my favorite, uncomfortably accurate, newspaper headlines ever (from Kenya).
Headline is "Who's the banana republic now?", with the classic picture of Richard Barnett sitting at Nancy Pelosi's desk with his foot up.

It's worth pointing out that while The Difference Principle gets the most attention* it's not only not the full result, it's the tail end of the account. It only even starts to apply once you have equal-and-equal-value rights and opportunities, which is most of the game.

What I love is the combination of Trump's history of betraying everyone around him, and the fact that as soon as any of them actually get the pardon his power over them vanishes. This still could all end in the funniest way.

While the rationale for that makes sense to me, I think that cars are good enough at protecting drivers from head-on collisions that we should design in the opposite direction. Every time one of those breaks away, it sends a pole flying and leaves an out of control car still careening around.

A lot of the industry overlaps with the rationalist cult, and for them the answer doesn't matter because they assume that it would instantly be a god with magical powers and we will be the slaves. Don't try to make too much sense of it. They think being smart in a particular way does that?

I would be much calmer about "efficiency mode" if windows had the slightest ability to tell what processes are in the background. Instead it just locks firefox every so often. Yes it is using a lot of memory. That is because it is the foreground program, that I am using!

We don't even need to - this is the specific definition for the term for chapter 171!
A screenshot with MN Statute 171.01 (Definitions) with the definition of the term "person", reading
""Person" means every natural person, firm, copartnership, association, or corporation."

Also, re: claiming to move too fast to be regulated, I have yet to see a good argument why MN Statute 171.02 Subd 1 does not apply straightforwardly to these things. We don't need to play "WORLD of THE FUTURE!" games with these people. We have applicable regulations already!
