I have always been fascinated by the power of words and the ability of gifted writers to ignite the imagination, fuel the intellect and feed the soul. Reading is the supreme indulgence and perhaps connects us most intimately with what it is to be human.

🧘 Insight from Epictetus: “We must not believe the many who say that only free people ought to be educated, but we should rather believe the philosophers who say that only the educated are free.”

I attended the famous Savoy theatre in Monmouth last night for an evening of poetry with Rowan Williams and Pele Cox, what a treat! The readings were simply sumptuous!

Just after his release from the asylum, and a few weeks before he died, van Gogh painted this vibrant scene of flowering chestnut trees in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise. Not seen in public for many decades, it’s hoped to fetch $180m at auction (Châtaigniers en Fleurs, May 1890)
Sunny day, but with very dark blue sky. Large tree, with many yellow/orange flowers, by the side of a dirt road where a man is walking. Three women in colourful dresses walk with parasols on footpath in shade of tree

250th Birthday Celebration in ‘A Promised Land’….
Being a man of a certain age, I can recall 1976 and the bi-centennial celebrations to mark the 200th ‘birthday’ of the USA. Gerald Ford was president and as part of the celebrations, more than 10,000 people were naturalised as citizens in mass ceremonies held in Chicago, Detroit and Miami. While in New York, tall ships formed a flotilla with hundreds of smaller vessels.

I was struck by an article on the Beeb yesterday suggesting discovered cave art implies the first people to arrive in Ireland may have walked there from Wales. Quite a close knit neighbourhood! I look forward to reading your book!

The Carnegie library in Abergavenny was built in 1905 with a grant of £4000 and served us into the 21st century. What a gift for such a distant community and speaks to an exceptional man with great vision.
