FT analysis shows ICE has spent at least $353mn on surveillance contracts this year, up 27 per cent from 2024. Some of these sidestep legal restraints on surveillance by purchasing data from third parties. They also raise worrying questions about outsourcing sensitive work to the private sector.
A stacked area chart showing a steady increase in ICE spending on surveillance tools from 2018 to 2025, reaching nearly $400 million. Subcharts show increases in categories like data analysis, intercept/exploit tools, geolocation, data brokers, biometrics, and state/local contracts. Spending spikes most notably in 2025.

With watchdogs sidelined, critics fear surveillance could go beyond migration. A former DHS official notes a shift from immigration enforcement to "domestic security". This, he adds, appears to be an “ever-expanding category”. Read @peter.andringa.me's investigation on #FTEdit 👉 on.ft.com/4oGyQfT

Palantir Releases a Radical Hiring Pathway Challenging the Traditional College Model
Introduction A silent tension is growing at the crossroads of education, technology, and opportunity. Palantir, one of America’s most influential defense software companies, has stepped forward with a bold declaration. Instead of waiting for top talent to emerge from universities, it is attempting to shape that talent from the moment students leave high school. Its new Meritocracy Fellowship aims to offer young graduates a direct path into high-impact work, without the detour of a four-year degree.
