New analysis from Contrails.org found that airplane contrails block enough sunlight to cost roughly $600 million a year in lost solar power by 2035. Europe gets hit hardest. Contrail avoidance isn't just about stopping warming. It's also about protecting the energy we need to replace fossil fuels.

A five-year-old called them "sky graffiti": contrails, those white streaks that trap heat. A UK trial is using AI to predict where contrails will form and try to avoid them forming. But the trial only tackles contrails, not CO₂; we are years from cleaning up the whole sky. 🌫️✈️

Did you know? In the three days after the 11 September 2001 attacks, all commercial flights across the United States were grounded, and the difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures widened. Evidence that contrails trap heat, as scientists had suspected but had not been able to prove.

It's Electric! ✈️ The biggest electric plane just took flight. Genuine milestone, but here's the honest version: it's a 30-seat plane flying about 200km and not due in service until 2031. The only lever we actually have for decreasing the impact of long-haul flights is flying them less. ⚡✈️
