Per Dr. Pear, "widespread use of [a red flag law] often hinges on whether people in power are pushing to use the law working with law enforcement and judges on procedures." More on understanding and covering ERPO from @kwashburn.bsky.social @healthjournalism.org healthjournalism.org/blog/2026/02...

📜 Did you know that no state or federal laws prohibit clinicians from asking their patients clinically relevant questions about firearms? 🏡 Many clinicians, however, do not talk with patients about the risks of firearms in the home, even when it’s clinically indicated. 1/2

Rural Northern California counties have some of the nation’s highest rates of gun suicides among older adults. Over 15 years, the gun suicide rate of adults 70 and older in Trinity, Tehama, Plumas, Lassen, Glenn, Calaveras, and Amador was 35.6 deaths per 100,000, more than 3x the statewide rate.
A horizontal dot-plot chart compares gun suicide rates among adults aged 70 and older across different county types in California. The title states that rural counties have the highest rates. On the left, county categories are listed from most rural to most urban. On the right, dots show the rate per 100,000 residents. Rural counties have the highest rate, about 32 per 100,000. Small town counties are around 25. Small metro counties are around 19, medium metro around 13, suburban near 11, and major metro counties have the lowest rate, about 9. A note below explains the data covers 2009–2023 and uses CDC urban–rural classifications.
