Karl Clark is a Great Canadian Builder Before the oil sands were a place in northern Alberta where over $500B was spent to unlock the trapped wealth, before they provided jobs to Canadians far and wide, and before they provided billions each year in royalties to government, they were a bog.

"The powerful have their power. But we have something too — the capacity to stop pretending, to name reality, to build our strength at home, and to act together. That is Canada’s path. We choose it openly and confidently. And it is a path wide open to any country willing to take it with us." 🏗️🇨🇦

This was in part thanks to RC Harris, the Commissioner of Public Works in Toronto. He built sewer mains and water reservoirs. His magnum opus is the water treatment plant that bears his name, a stunning example of Art Deco that still provides 40% of Toronto's drinking water today.

RC Harris is a Great Canadian Builder The early 1900s were not a good time to be born in Toronto. For every thousand births, 140 children would not live to see their first birthday, a shocking death rate partly caused by poor sanitation and water. Yet by the early 20s, infant mortality would halve.

Canada produces world-class research but struggles to turn it into world-class companies. Canadian startups do well in their early stages. But they hit a wall when they try to grow past $100 million in revenue. At that point, the system abandons them.

We'll find out this week how serious we as a country are at breaking down internal trade barriers. It's estimated that breaking down barriers that make it harder for goods and services to be sold from one province to another can lead to $200B or 7.9% of GDP growth.
