I’m not a quippy hot take writer for the most part. My brain works things out in more words. Oh well!

I’m really only on socials because my music, so maybe that’s part of it. Also i write long form and the character limits here make me nuts. Threads has the superior tech of formatting longer posts into multiple sections. Here, there’s labor. And when it’s my 7th platform of the day, I can’t.

Totally get it! I left Twitter years ago and went to Threads, which is mostly just a talking shit app, but it’s where I’ve been.

I am an utter failure on this app. I can’t ever seem to remember to post here, or even come hang out & scroll the feed, even though some of my smartest pals & comrades say this is their fave platform. It might have come into my social media life too late & I can’t add one more thing. Anyway, hi!

This landscape was built quite deliberately. And the songs stayed with me through it all. They always know where we’re going even when I don’t. Thanks to everyone who worked on this project and all who have listened to and celebrated this work over the last 12 months!

I experienced actual creative discovery while writing, recording, & producing this record. I started one place and ended up somewhere else. I changed my mind. I went back for things once discarded. I held on to pieces & placed them carefully where I thought they fit best. I created a sonic collage.

but the songs will stand in whatever soil they’re planted. They’ll grow leaves in any light. Songwriting is a translation of life and concept into melody, form, and lyric. It defies limitation and categorization at the root. It’s what we do with it later that tends to suggest genre and style.

You might favor one production approach over another, but the songs don’t care and can exist in myriad sonic landscapes. I know, because I write the songs in both of my projects. Committing to one direction or the other is part of the artistry and presentation of the work,

and witnessing their online statements, has a real disdain for what they consider to be Americana and Singer-Songwriter music. They tend to favor edgier, noisier work, which, for the record, I make in my other project. But songs are songs.

and what I think about now is the ongoing dialogue about songwriting and what it is. Someone did a quick review of ADULT CHILD not long after its release and hastily named what they thought the standout track was, applied genres etc. That person, I know from personal interactions

This song and & NEW by Friendship Commanders are about the same person / story. This one was first; I think there’s more hurt here, and more acceptance / clarity in NEW. Anyway, this is the only track on the album on which I played MAYA the Gibson Sonex, so I thought I’d play her in the video! 2/3

Recently told someone that I tend to say the most painful / true thing in the bridge, and that’s definitely the case in BIRTHDAYS & BULLSHIT, the loudest track on ADULT CHILD. Loud with grief, though; not anger. People confuse the two. 1/3

Named after my Polaroid, the song is about what it’s been like to allow my own lens to change over the course of my life, all the while documenting things with that trusty camera. This one sounds happier than it is at parts. It’s a major key composition with some minor key truths tucked within. 2/3

New pedal! Ballou sent me this GCI Crimson Cock pedal for my birthday so I’m checking it out with my live rigs for @fcommanders.bsky.social! When activated, it seems to boost and brighten the mids, and when set to BUGAWK mode, there’s a noticeable beef / crisis that happens - which of course I love.
