Bit late to it (by about a week) but I actually got an response from my Strawpage after ages since setting it up so I can actually answer it now! ^v^ Mostly to provide a proper detailed response, I'll be making this a thread :>

Funnily enough, the little lore rework I did to Beetle has actually inspired me to go back and change some of Bugdeon's older mechanics and lore. Ain't that crazy?? For now here's a fun little lore teaser of sorts I'm working on And yes, it will have some in-game functionality too ^v^

Sorry for the wall of text but here's some extra stuff I wanna say as an image so this doesn't become a comically huge thread I am also aware I haven't really touched much on the player character lore, but that's mostly since a lot of it is sorta unfinished to a degree
For the record by "traumatize" I mostly mean rework their character to have at least some kinda actual issue like the other player characters, which (at least given what I have conceptualized) is going to be some kinda trauma

I don't plan on drastically changing the character either. They're still gonna be exactly how they were before to a degree, but hopefully with a bit more to them to make them stand out just the tiniest bit more

Then again maybe adding such a thing in a cast where everyone's insane to an extent is a bad idea. Given that this exists for feedback, you tell me XvX|||

I doubt this'll really work out but I wanna ask anyways purely just for any kind of feedback I wanna add a bit to Beetle's character. Literally since their conception they've been written as "generically standard guy in leader role" and I've been thinking of giving them a bit more depth So, TLDR:

Here's some extra goodies also, including the initial concept art (which I've posted before) and an extra image detailing a neat lil' bit of trivia regarding the design The decision to make their design canonically not their real one was inspired by how depictions of angels tended to vary a lot
"Canonically, they have no 'true' exact appearance. It changes from person to person.

Some details are the same regardless however. The include wings, head feathers, black cloak, and 1 broken antenna

Everything else will change one way or another

No interpretation is truly the real one"

Wow today's art sure got weird didn't it?? Anywho, this is another one 'a the game's Chance Time event NPCs named Birdwing! (Which also means they're not that major) Design-wise, they're partially inspired by biblically accurate angels, alongside the similarly named group of Birdwing butterflies
One of various birdwing butterflies (more specifically in this case, a Queen Alexandra's Birdwing). One of many depictions of a biblically accurate angel

Guess who finally got Tabletop Simulator??? (For the record this isn't going to speed up development in the slightest, it just means that I can make this hypothetically playable now)

As for lore, there ain't much else I can really say at the moment besides "The tyrant was abandoned by their people and is REALLY mad". So there's that Another fun fact about this design: their weapon has a microwave stirrer attached to it since their microwave was broken in their "quest" chain

Extra details time?? After this long??? Hurrayyyyy!!! ^v^ This is once again another pre-existing boss being given some extra content (in this case, Pharaoh) in the form of an alternative fight with them!

Something that's been kinda on my mind when it comes to coming up with coin drops, max Mana, or other numerical values for Bugdeon is really the SCALE of it all. I'm not a game dev in the slightest so I don't know how to describe it, but here's a crudely drawn image to hopefully convey my point

Fun fact about today's art: It's literally the largest character drawing I've done for this project currently By MS Paint scales, they're roughly 499 x 577px Death's-Head Hawkmoth is ~ 562 x 327px and Wasp is ~ 424 x 405px

Technically speaking, a small amount of inspiration for the concept of alternate routes / bosses was from Spamton and, more specifically, the requirements for fighting Spamton NEO. With Spamton being technically a forced boss if you were to do Snowgrave, but optional otherwise
An in-game screenshot of Spamton NEO (Deltarune) near the end of Chapter 2 whilst on the Snowgrave routeAn in-game screenshot of Spamton NEO (Deltarune) as seen in the optional variation of their bossfight whilst not doing Snowgrave

This is all probably an itsy bit confusing, especially given this is literally just a pre-existing boss (Stagger, who I'll have a pic of here) but dead, so I may as well explain the concept with this thread, that being: Alternate Routes / Quests!

Welp, today's officially the day! Exactly 1 year ago as of me typing this, the first bit of art and concept material was provided for Bugdeon in the form of Beetle as the very first player character! Bugdeon is now officially 1 year old!! Hurray(???)

When it came to the outfit creation process however, I ended up going with a hat that technically belonged to Yourself (Silly Billy if you need a more recognizable name), as it matched what I wanted from the hat. Thus, to make the clothes match, I sampled Yourself's color palette

A bit of a small fun fact thread about this outfit: Spider was intended to be far more red instead of purple. If you saw my custom Balatro cards I posted a bit ago, you may have noticed Spider uses a lot of red on their card (in part to being a reference to Boyfriend FNF)

April Fools is over so I can safely say that Shmunkle Bug Fables isn't a real character and will not be added Also, since the whole joke of this post sadly got put as a hidden reply, here's the image that was attached in the replies without the ""spoiler""
For obvious reasons, this is an April Fools joke.

What isn't a joke is me hoping that you have a great rest of your day if you are reading this! Make sure 'ya have fun today and stay safe ^v^

Hi everyone today we're going to be adding the 100% highly fan requested character "Shmunkle Bug Fables" into Bugdeon. More details will be revealed over the coming week, but for now here's his artwork. He is very lore relevant!

Final thing I wanna bring up is some extra detail I put into the design I actually am rather proud of this design admittingly, so I kinda went out of my way to make some rushed concept art to sorta show how the design works

Third thing to bring up: Lore! I did actually finalize the butterfly lore a decent bit truth be told. While yes, butterflies are still overtly contorted and misfigured, canonically this robotic fella was made before that had happened Perhaps this snippet of a lore entry will help clear some air
"I've ensured the next generation will be better than us. Stronger, faster, smarter, all of it. My colleagues say that I am a fool for this, but I know better. They don't understand the literal power of godhood that I have granted us. I may not be able to see the fruits of my labor, but I know for a fact that this is the only correct way forwards for us all as a species. Alesa, if you're reading this in whatever afterlife there may be, I'll be coming to see you once more soon. May you forgive me for your mechanical clone, for your beauty was what helped me stay strong and continue my research."]

First up: Origins! Besides being a massive reference to Angela (More intended to be their Library of Ruina appearance, but also taking some influence from their Lobotomy Corporation appearance also), they're (albeit broadly) based off the Alesa genus of Riodinidae (AKA Metalmark Butterflies)
2 instances of (what are as of my research), Alesa Amesis.

(Actually finding proper research for anything Alesa related was weirdly difficult so I'm sorry if I'm wrong XvX|||)Angela, as seen in Library of RuinaAngela, as seen in Lobotomy Corporation

Since I am the Bugdeon ARCHIVE, here's the original entry I had for Firefly in case I decide to rewrite it (which may actually happen given I feel as if this entry isn't that good as it is) This was written around the time the design was made too so it's rather old
[Firefly's much like a decent chunk of the residents of the Fly Horde, in the sense that he's completely broke. That matchstick? Stole it from the Ant Tribe. The hat? Made of random sticky papers he "borrowed" from the Mantis Tribe. The clothes? Also stolen, but he forgot from where. As for what drove him to a point of not being able to buy anything? Graduating as a mage actually! Moth and Firefly used to be roomates attending the same school too! Hell, you wanna know who took the last avaliable mage graduation slot when him and Moth were graduating? That's right, it was Firefly, and Moth's STILL mad about it despite Firefly not even being able to afford food because nobody actually hires mages, and that sadly includes mages taught under the very prestigious (and expensive) Yeshley. The Fly Horde was nice enough to hire him, though he really just gets paid in whatever he's allowed to keep from scavenging missions. To quote Firefly directly:

"I know Moth didn't want to be a cleric, but I'd say he lucked out. At least he has a job that pays in Gold"]

While I'm still active on this account right now, I should probably mention that I found out (from my research) that Fireflies are actually beetles I'm not moving Firefly out of the Fly Horde because of that, but I will make sure to make their lore entry reflect this fact. Oopsies I guess?? ^v^|||

More bugs!! Hurray!! First thing I wanna explain before all the lore is some minor trivia regarding the design: 1: This is the first Butterfly to be added into Bugdeon! (Basically every future design will also look this... "contorted") 2: They're (partially) based off of a standard Painted Lady

And share extra concept stuff I WILL! There's planned to be a Chance Time event around this fella, but I haven't quite finished the specifics yet. I DID however finish an item concept, so here's that in text form! I'll talk more about the design when it's actually finished
Leukotomy Novel - An old book filled with knowledge about things, creatures, and names that don't even seem to be part of this reality. Upon use, regen the holder's Mana back to max, and gain an additional 50% of your Mana back on top of your max Mana temporarily (temporary Mana will only go away upon being spent, and will be spent before real Mana), but gain the Leukosis Flaw. If the Leukosis Flaw is owned: Regen 50% of your max Mana plus 2 additional Mana instead. This item has a 4 turn cooldown upon use, and can not expire. This item can not be used during a rest period, and is bound to the character that has the Leukosis Flaw, meaning it can not be dropped, sold, or moved to another party member. Collectors will pay 5x the standard selling price for an unused copy

Leukosis (Flaw, Passive)- You're no longer able to regen Mana from any and all sources but the Leukotomy Novel. Automatically removes any Boons and Flaws that revolve around Mana regen upon obtainment and rerolls them for other random Boons and Flaws respectively. Boons and Flaws revolving around Mana regen can no longer be obtained on the character with this Flaw. The Leukotomy Novel can no longer be removed in any way from a character who has this Flaw.

Welp this is sure weird, ain't it? I obviously mentioned the fact that this is an old OC remodeled for Bugdeon, but something I DIDN'T mention is that the redesign was inspired by STAT Regretevator... of all things I dunno why, when I was drawing them they gave off STAT vibes. The rest is history

Working on the Wasp redesign and Ladybug's reference picture made me realize "You know, I don't know why, but some of the art for Bugdeon DOES feel a bit old", and after digging for the reason why, I remembered this project is technically half a year old Kinda crazy honestly

Interesting fact to point out also: They're probably one of, if not, the most detailed designs in Bugdeon as a whole to be officially used. Almost little to no white on the design in the slightest! For reference, here's some prior Special enemies which also have a decent amount of detail on them:
000
The Bugdeon Archive @bugdeonarchive.bsky.social · 09/12/2024
Another Special enemy This one had been planned since around early November. Kinda happy it's finally done They're (loosely) based off the Death's-Head Hawkmoth, and were more so designed in reference to a random Roblox avatar I made once. Embarrassing to admit? Yes!

As is tradition with the Fly Horde faction also, they're a Deepwoken reference to an extent In the case of this enemy, they're (vaguely) supposed to be a Chrysid. It's also worth pointing out that the ring around their neck (and wings to an extent) is also a reference to the Starkindred Oath
A Chrysid. From DeepwokenThe Starkindred Halo, as part of the respective Oath. From DeepwokenThe wings typically seen alongside the Starkindred Oath whilst as a Chrysid. From Deepwoken

Took a while, but the final enemy for the Fly Horde is complete As I joked about in the original post (in a totally subtle and not in your face way), they're based off of Moth Flies

Also I'll admit I forgot about it when I posted this but here's the Chance Time event tied to them as well. Their current name is just going to be Jewel Beetle for the time being Once again, still not finalized
-Aesthetics of Hate (Limit: None. Requirements: Can only be pulled AFTER the 1st shop encounter)

“Your kind know nothing but hunger. Purged all life blocking your path just to reach your goals the same as all the other tribes mutilate each other for no purpose other than raw greed. They remain unsatiated... as do you. And if it means drowning you out until the very water I entrap you in goes dry to end your STUPIDITY, THAN SO BE IT! I’LL SHOW YOU DIVINE JUSTICE ONCE AND FOR ALL!”

On the next area, the dungeon master is forced to play a Jewel Beetle onto the board for free. This Chance Time event is capable of bypassing Jewel Beetle’s maximum number of times it can be summoned by the Dungeon Master, meaning that even if the limit has been reached, this Chance Time event will still have its effect activate and summon a Jewel Beetle. (Note: A free summon of Jewel Beetle will not count towards the summon limit, meaning if you didn’t summon a Jewel Beetle up to this point and pull this Chance Time event, Jewel Beetle can still be played in a future area. You cannot have 2 Jewel Beetles on the board at a given point however). Upon obtaining this Chance Time event whilst this effect is already active or simply by not meeting the requirements, reroll for a new Chance Time event.

Got bored. Here's the full enemy details for this goober as of currently. May do lore entry later Keep in mind that nothing here is finalized in the slightest. All the names for stuff are still placeholders. I had to split the Specials into 2 for alt text by the way. Sorry about that
Innates:

-+ENRAGED
A Special failing (or failing to cast), being cancelled (via innates, statuses, etc.) or having a -2 or -3 modifier roll will give you Blind Rage for a turn. Alternatively, a basic attack being dodged or cancelled via sources such as Innates or status effects will ALSO give you Blind Rage for a turn. This Innate can activate multiple times, but the duration of Blind Rage is capped at a max of 3 turns, and will stop activating once said cap is reached. This will also put this Innate on a 2 turn cooldown which will only start once you no longer have Blind Rage. Being afflicted with the Anger status condition will also instead convert it to Blind Rage for an equal duration. If this Innate is on cooldown, you can not be afflicted with Blind Rage or Anger from any sources. If Jewel Scarab has been defeated by the party at least once before, Blind Rage will activate immediately when the fight starts and never expire, but at the cost of 50% of your max HP.

-Cry for the Weeper
Upon landing any kind of damage with a Special (chip included, but not from statuses), gain 1 Rain Charge. Rain Charges can be used to alter your Specials. Whilst under the Blind Rage status effect, you gain 2 Rain Charges for dealing damage with Specials instead of 1. You may only carry 12 Rain Charges at any time. (Note: Failing to cast a Special modified with Rain Charges will NOT refund Rain Charges, but will still activate +ENRAGED).

-Apostate of Hate
You can now use 2 separate basic attacks in a single turn instead of 1. However, you can only use the additional basic attack if you have used a basic attack already (In other words, you can't use a Special and a basic attack in 1 turn, only either a Special or 2 basic attacks). This restriction is removed if you have the Blind Rage status effect, but doing so will cost 4 Rain Charges and has a 1 turn cooldown. Specials:

-Splendor is Justice (4 turn cooldown)
Conjure swords made of water to encircle you and deal chip damage to anything near you at the end of your turn for 3 turns (including the turn you casted the Special). These swords can also protect you from ranged attacks upwards of 3 times, with each ranged attack blocked reducing the chip damage dealt until there are no swords remaining. Can be empowered with 6 Rain Charges to swing a larger sword around you, dealing damage instantly instead of over time, applying Soaked for 2 turns, and reducing the cooldown of this Special to 2 turns. Both variants of the Special will fail if afflicted with the Chill or Freeze status effects.

-Justice is Splendor (3 turn cooldown)
Materialize an axe of water to chuck at your foes. Using 4 Rain Charges can allow you to throw 2 axes instead of one, but the second axe will never hit the same enemy. Both axes will also give Rain Charges respectively. Both variants of this Special will fail if you have less than 2 Rain Charges (Note: it will not cost you those Rain Charges to use the Special, but if you spend 4 Rain Charges to buff this Special and are left with 1, it will still fail, but also count as 2 failures instead of 1). -Divine Justice (2 turn cooldown)
Empower yourself to lunge forwards with a watery spear, dealing damage to all in range and launching yourself forwards in the process. With 10 Rain Charges, you can empower your spear to catapult yourself even further, destroy wall terrains in your path, and deal far more damage at the cost of needing a turn to charge up, and increasing the turn cooldown to 5. With the Blind Rage status effect, this will deal 50% less damage, but hit all in range twice and return you to your starting position (~80% damage with Blind Rage's attack buff accounted for). This will also increase the cooldown of this Special to 3 without Rain Charges, and 6 with Rain Charges. This Special will fail if a wall terrain is in your path (you'll fly into the wall and take 2 chip damage, but not deal damage to anything in range). The Rain Charge variant of this Special however will only fail if you take damage during the charging phase (Note: chip damage does not count, but friendly fire will).

As for the actual insect specifically I based them off (at least for research), it was the Jewel Scarab. I thought it fit given Gabriel's shiny armor They're also technically the first enemy to use water magic in the game. How fun!

Some stuff worth actually bringing up regarding this fella: 1: Yes, it is still a reference to Gabriel Ultrakill, but it's more specifically referencing one of his older unused designs. It fit the fact this is (at least supposed to be) a scarab REALLY well in my opinion.

I have no idea how I forgot this, but given that it didn't play a role in Bugdeon's gameplay whatsoever, I can sorta understand why also Bug Fables: Inspired a lot of the artwork and designs for the player characters and various enemies. Also various aspects of the game's lore to an extent

Fire Emblem (GBA) / Mario and Rabbids: (I swear these sound more unhinged the further I go...) Inspired the grid-based battle system planned for the game. Mario and Rabbids was kinda the first game I took the idea from, while Fire Emblem helped enforce the idea and make it simpler to manage
