I’m ride or die for 1. Outside. It’s a concatenation of bizarre and discordant influences that coalesce into a concept album that’s greater than the sum of its parts. The individual tracks hit hard. It’s also the start of Bowie’s industrial jazz era that he perfected in Blackstar.

Speaking purely for myself--and this example page is from 2013, so be merciful!--I have to think in terms of the page or the two-page spread. Breaking things up into panels is basically a function of importance and time spent in each panel. My pages aren't splashy but they have tempo!

I read today that bands-dessinee cartoonists use four tiers of panels instead of three. The thought never occurred to me before. Four tiers? Why? For good reasons! The first reason is purely practical. European BDs are printed on A4-size paper, slightly taller than American trimmed-tabloid comic pages. Like this one. The taller page lends itself to a taller system of composition! Logic! But the other reason is why I like BDs a lot. More tiers means more panels per page. Each page is dense with information. There's time for story--plenty of it. And time to just-- <sigh> --breathe and enjoy the moment. That's what I like about really good comics. They can create a moment for you--however impossible--that's as real in memory as having lived it. A good cartoonist can put the reader... into someone else's skin.

Hi, I’m Buddy! I’ve been trying more traditional media lately, especially inks and acrylic gouache. I love that classic cartooning and illustration look.

Pen and ink sketches of Kamen Rider Ichigo, a little happy dragon tchotchke on my desk, and an attempt at a black Labrador. Dark values are hard in ink! I didn’t want to overdo it, so I think I underdid it.

A character study of Blitzø from Helluva Boss. Sketched in pencil, inked with a Zebra nib, and painted with Holbein acrylic gouache.
