49 Up was the first instalment I saw, at Cinematheque in my mid-20s, I was captivated. I wonder what it would be like to watch the latest and last without any context, but I found it moving, intensely resonant. Great that it has space for (limited) self-reflexion

other gender identities are in the planning stage
A web form partially obscured by an explanatory popup. The form is for “Your personal details” and the introduction has “Please” and “Travel ID” visible. The field “Salutation” is next with “Mr” selected and “Ms” being the other option.

The popup text: «The salutations “Mr” and “Ms” are currently the only options available due to technical reasons. Additional options which will also include other gender identities are in the planning stage.»

Worldle can’t decide whether it acknowledges Somaliland or not
A screenshot of the Worldle game on the neighbour-guessing step. The player is asked to guess three neighbours of Somali, with a map of the area. Ethiopia is guessed, as is Kenya but its label and southern half are off-screen. Djibouti has not yet been guessed. The disputed territory of Somaliland is missing, but the implication of asking for Djibouti as a neighbour is that Somaliland isn’t separate from Somalia.

Prison abolitionism in Winnipeg didn’t come out of nowhere!
A demonstration outside the constituency office of MLA Andrew Swan, the awning of whose office has been covered with a banner that says “stop prison expansion” and “stop C-10”. Another banner on the sidewalk says “libraries not jails”. The people are dressed in winter gear, and a person with a guitar is standing in the street.

Part of WPS’s approach was to send plainclothes police officers to pose as aggressive drivers to encourage resistance from cyclists as a pretext to arrest them. Shameful!

Duncan blames us for misreading his draft bylaw, but since we (sadly) live in a colony bound by written laws, it’s his responsibility to make sure the bylaw says what he means. You can’t charge that we should “read the report”; the report ≠ the law! But there’s no amending this, just abandon it

Does the City of Winnipeg think Winnipeggers don’t merit access to city information outside the country? A courteous mitigation to such a shameful choice would be to explain what’s happening, as most people lack the technical awareness to understand and route through a local address as I did here.
A terminal session with two commands. The first fetches a City of Winnipeg page using curl and receives a 403 Forbidden response. The second does the same using a redacted machine as an intermediate via SSH, and the request succeeds with an HTML response truncated by the bottom of the window.

In the modern era, where are these meetings and dis/agreements? (CN: at least one TERF unremarked)
A sheet titled “Can drag queens be socialists?” in a booklet, with an image credit at the bottom and this text:

In 1973, the Homosexual Action Group West Berlin (HAW) organized an international meeting of homosexual activist groups. Some participants who had travelled all the way from Italy and France appeared in drag at the final demonstration, with “eye shadow and blue fingernails,” as the tabloid press reported. Their appearance triggered a major strategy debate within the West German gay movement, which went down in history as the ”drag queens’ dispute“ (”Tunten-streit“). While some saw drag as an unnecessary and apolitical provocation that stood in the way of an alliance with the working class, others saw it as the most effective way to make one’s gay identity “public.” The latter wing of the HAW became henceforth known as Feminists and solidarized with the feminist women’s movement. Their position did not prevail: the feminist critique of gender roles was not to play an important role in the political project of the gay movement.A sheet titled “Must lesbians be feminists?” in a booklet, with this text:

The first national meeting of lesbian activists in the Federal Republic took place in West Berlin in 1974. More than 200 participants discussed the question ”Is feminism the theory and lesbianism the practice?“ with reference to the popular thesis attributed to Ti-Grace Atkinson. American authors such as Rita Mae Brown, Kate Millet, Jill Johnston, and Mary Daly were vital instigators of radical lesbian feminism in the Federal Republic. In the mid-1970s, lesbian activists separated from the gay movement; they no longer called themselves gay (schwul) but lesbian, became involved in the women’s movement, and were key to the success of the feminist revolt. In the GDR, too, lesbian women initially organized along with homosexual men but started forming their own groups by the mid-1980s.
