Jesus I just saw a post on twitter talking about BIID with 2,000 likes. Even if only 10% of those likes actually have BIID it really shocked me how many other people there are out there with this condition. I've felt like I'm basically completely alone with this for years now.

there is a terrible, bitter irony in how the Vaccination Assistance Act of 1962—a lesser-discussed achievement of JFK that made funding available to guarantee all children could get vaccinated for polio, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, and other diseases—is now likely to be undone by his nephew.

How incredible is it that these totally ordinary moments from the lives of ancient Babylonian students have survived. These are the 4,000-year-old teeth marks of a 12ish-year-old kid who bit a clay assignment cdli.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/artifacts/23...
A triangular fragment of a reddish brown clay tablet pictured from various angles. On one side, three teeth marks are visible in the tablet, and on the other side are cuneiform signs.

Young Babylonian students sometimes stuck their fingernails in clay when they were maybe supposed to be paying closer attention in class. This nearly 4,000-year-old one from Nippur looks almost like a drawing in progress cdli.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/artifacts/26...
A black and white photo of a broken, round clay tablet with fingernail marks. A crack runs down the centre at a diagonal. The number 11600 are written in ink near the bottom of the clay tablet, a modern museum label. At the bottom of the screenshot photo is the full museum identifier typed out as “CBS 11600 obv.” (Obv = obverse)

The ancient Assyrian businesswoman Taram-Kubi didn’t just write to her husband about business. She also asked him to come home. “The beer bread I made for you has become too old… Let me see you in person while I am still alive.” cdli.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/artifacts/35...

i really enjoy all the weird crank theories that people put forward about the voynich manuscript. I also enjoy how they open with "this is not a book" and then call it a book multiple times

i had never thought about what the etymology of copacetic might be until just now after seeing a post about it. it seems to have just been made up by a guy writing a book about Lincoln. www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/c...

Without BASIC, you don't have thousands of invested hobbyists in the 70s, who go on to teach millions of young programmers in the 80s. Without DTSS's ability to manage hundreds of simultaneous users, you don't have UNIX. And without Thomas Kurtz, we wouldn't have either. RIP, Professor Kurtz.

newsky users here are some culture notes: - it is a good thing to be attacked by the enemy - no investigation, no right to speak - correct ideas arise from social practice - it is one’s social being which determines their thinking

Well, this is a curious artifact - this image was used to explain what a digital computer was to people who were used to human computers. (Source.)
Up top, the title "BASIC COMPUTER ELEMENTS: comparision between manual composition..." The top half illustrates manual composition: a whistling man carries loose paper marked 'incoming problem' to a desk, and leaves it at a 'Notebook'; the operator, with a 'Desk Calculating Machine' to his left, works with pen and paper; the man leaves, printed folios of answers in hand. Below a horizontal rule, page bottom, the title continues: "...and Whirlwind I Computation." An arrow pointing in states "problems to be done," leading to a box labeled Input Devices; Input Devices points to a broad system bus line. Next is Storage, which reads from and writes to the system bus. Next is Control; control reads from the system bus, and writes to all boxes in this diagram. Next is Arithmetic Element; it reads from and writes to the system bus. Last is Output Devices; it reads from the system bus and writes out "Results in Desired Form."

is searching by language completely broken on this site? I can't tell if the language detection is really bad or if people have to set their post languages manually, because if I search "lang:da" I get a lot of posts that are clearly not in Danish
