I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'll believe that fuel is too expensive when I don't routinely see people parked up in their cars with the engine running.

Last ever commute today? Rail company has gone early with their attempts to make it a challenge. But I’m too long in the tooth to be unable to counter. I’m predicting their next gambit will be to mess with things tomorrow when I go on holiday. Meanwhile, the order is ‘Engage the silent drive!’

For years I’ve been telling people you don’t have to buy rail tickets on Trainline. They charge a booking fee. Buy direct from the rail company via their app or via National Rail app. At least one company will pay you back a small amount each time you use their site. Repost to make more aware.

Felt all game that we weren’t at our best in lots of areas today - way too open - but we kept going & showed resilience & character. Some established players not at their best but Hayden Hackney & Tyrique George impressed. Work hard & see where we are in Jan? We’ll need luck with injuries etc #EFC

I’m glad we didn’t get Balogun. What I’m NOT glad about is how we got to that situation in the first place. The whole ‘top recruitment team’ thing stinks. The club needs to stop this Deadline Day nonsense, get recruitment done early AND HAVE A CLEAR PLAN. The Armstrong situation was a fiasco #EFC

Somebody needs to explain why once again we end up trying to negotiate deals at the worst time for the most important positions - the obviously crucial ones. These were a RB and a striker. We’ve been absolutely negligent in handling both these. 5th (?) choice RB, down to one fit striker. #EFC

Australia on brink of historic defeat to Bangladesh as batting woes resurface
* First Test, day three: Australia 198 and 161-4; Bangladesh 426 * Cameron Green rides luck to remain unbeaten on 43 at stumps Australia will have to dig themselves out of a huge hole without their best batsman Steve Smith after Bangladesh kept their foot on the hosts’ throat in pursuit of an upset Test win in Darwin. Under-pressure all-rounder Cameron Green, who was bailed out by a stroke of luck, was looking composed on an unbeaten 43 at stumps on day three, along with wicketkeeper Alex Carey (19 no), as Australia reached 161 for 4 in their second innings. Two great team performances in the Metro Bank 50-over competition today. One of the best benefits of the ridiculously contrived H*ndred is that proper #cricket fans can see talented young players for their county sides in a decent competition. 4 good teams in the semi finals. All on YouTube as well.

Decent day with the great, sweary Wiltshire Al (heehee 😉!) and #FWW ‘maps’ today. Maps - a term used very loosely by past staff. Yes, there was a brilliant find from an officer in 1/4th Ox. and Bucks LI 🎣 in the lead up to the #Somme in June 1916, but the best of all wasn’t a #map at all … 🧵

This Chelsea stuff is crazy. How have they not faced harsher sentencing? You have teams like Spurs who would have won the league if they hadn’t cheated. Then there’s teams like Everton /Forest who’ve had point deductions for far less. Somethings going to give. Fans are rightly not happy.

Despite certain family members’ prononciation of the place name to suggest an unfortunate accident, #Chartres is a beautiful city and worth a visit.
Chartres cathedral with two spires and circular set of stained glass windows over three more narrow arched windows. The spires are different shapes and sizes. Huge graffiti of Jean Moulin, former head of the Eure and Loir département and massively influential figure in the French Resistance executed by the Nazis in 1943. A half timbered building with a lantern above the streetA glimpse of the river Eure as it flows slowly through Chartres.

I’ve asked the other members of my family why we came all the way to #France to see thatched cottages when we have them at home. A decent explanation has not been forthcoming. Still, an interesting, if not fact based discussion has taken place as a consequence. As usual ALT text offers more.
Like a thatched cottage n garden n sh*tDifferent angle. Same old shtick. Wooden fence. Spikey. Thatch etcSpikey wooden gate in spikey wooden fence and trees. Oh, and the thatched cottage. As perLow Box hedge in front of thatched drum where some rich person played being a poor peasant. Or was that one of the other places?
Anyway, door in stone wall leads to who knows what. Perhaps a “time slip” (historical footnote: turn of the 19th/20th century hallucinatory phenomenon that would have been posted with selfies on Instagram if there was access to it back in the day. They wrote a book about their experiences. (Who’d have guessed?). Masculine explanations for this behaviour are amusingly predictable.)
