Tonight's film: Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (Takashi Miike, 2011). Who knows when The Samurai and the Prisoner will come to the UK, and if I'll get the chance to see in the cinema. In the meantime, Mubi has served up this one, which sounds cool.

The new Ghost In The Shell show is a lot less ruminative and lot goofier than the film, but holy hell the animation is INCREDIBLE.

The new Ahsoka trailer has Thrawn saying "I took an oath to protect the empire. I therefore declare war on the Rebel Alliance." and it's like buddy, you're called empire and they're called the rebel alliance, I think the 'declaring war' ship has sailed.

Tonight's film: Magellan (Lav Diaz, 2025). I've only seen one other film by Diaz and I didn't particularly enjoy it, but I've heard good things about this one (and it's significantly shorter!) so I'll give it a shot.

The funny thing is that while this is definitely a more ruminative take than Nolan's, the moral aspect of the story feels underdeveloped, but the final fight sequence is actually better.

I haven't done #LetterboxdFriday 📽️ in a while because been watching more TV recently - including Olivier Assayas's amazing adaptation of Irma Vep that he did for HBO in 2022. I think it actually manages to top his original film.
