Started the day by jumping through bureaucratic hoops to get my family protected against harmful illnesses. Then came to campus to be inundated by rage-baiting political demonstrators holding signs with disturbing images on them. Can't this just be a Friday?

Does everyone find bands like Fleetwod Mac, America, and Steely Dan to be very cozy, or is it highly dependent on your dad?

"Hold the Line" by Toto just came on at our house and my daughter went over and said "Alexa, VOLUME UP!" so I'm feeling pretty good about that.

My daughter (w/o prompting) critiques dinner every night in a way that she truly believes is generous and kind. "To be honest, this salmon is not my favorite or very good. But I am proud of myself for trying it."

I just wrote to my students that "I’m looking forward to what will certainly be a most turnt discussion on this topic." and I'm not sorry about it. Okay, I'm a little sorry.

Those who aren't going to POD this year, where are you going instead? OR, if you are going to POD but you also wish you could go to another conference, what would you choose?

Probably not the right audience here, but I'm a fantasy football commissioner and our returning champ is choosing to keep Lamar Jackson. In the group chat, I wrote "Quoth the Raven, 'Let’s run it back' or something like that." and I can't believe nobody laughed. I don't get any funnier than that.

An emoji has a coded description that gets read aloud by screen readers. Putting emoji in between text could cause confusion or make content less clear. It's best to put emoji at the end of written content.

I’m raising funds for earthquake relief efforts in Colombia. I have some of my pix on RedBubble and all proceeds of all sales go to victims. If RedBubble is problematic, I’d love to know, too. Also, will add pix you like from here or from instagram. Same username everywhere.

Shoutout to all the educational developers out there who are ethically, morally, and practically motivated to discuss the impact of AI on education, despite their personal dislike or apathy toward the tools. Bonus shoutout to those who are being painted as "pushing AI" by faculty who don't like it.

Idk. I don't need to be known deeply by colleagues that I (at least try to) support. But this incident leaves me thinking about the importance of trust, relationships, communication, and openness in education. Often our actual beef is not with each other, but with the systems in which we all reside.

Bryan Doppel @bryandoppel.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
So I replied, "You know, I worry that some faculty think that about me, and it couldn't be further from the truth." and the prof left it there and walked in to teach their class.
100
Bryan Doppel @bryandoppel.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
So, anyway, when I heard that prof say that about me in the hall, I kind of couldn't believe it. But I also kind of could. They laughed it off and said, "Only joking, only joking." but idk. That message came from somewhere. And this one prof didn't come up with it all on their own. People talk.

Bryan Doppel @bryandoppel.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
I'm not sure that any amount of wordsmithing or workshop redesign was going to change the temp of that room. Unless I came in and said "AI bad. Handwriting good." I was not going to win any favor with them. As someone who desires to connect with and support faculty, this has been hard for me.
100
Bryan Doppel @bryandoppel.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
That's just not my style. What I was trying to do is make space for a discussion on the realities of this complex moment in teaching. But I was misunderstood. I take ownership of the language I used and the way I designed the workshop. Clearly I could have set things up differently. BUT

Bryan Doppel @bryandoppel.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
They hated it. They pushed back so hard at the thought of any student AI use in their courses and felt like I was pushing some sort of university AI agenda on them. This couldn't be farther from the truth. I have never, and would never, push any tool or pedagogical practice on any instructor.

Bryan Doppel @bryandoppel.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
I then discussed and strongly recommended writing an AI-use syllabus policy. I included guidance from the only university documents we have on the topic, which are a couple of years old, peppered in with some of my own experience, as well as guidance from the dept's own national organization.

Bryan Doppel @bryandoppel.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
The workshop is called "When is it Okay for Students to Use AI?" I customized it for this dept, as I had done for others before and since. I asked them to share situations in which students might use AI in their classes and then discuss whether or not that would be "okay".

Bryan Doppel @bryandoppel.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
For context, I was invited to do a workshop for a department on generative AI. I met with a faculty member ahead of time to show my plans for the workshop, which was a customized version of one I had done before. The prof told me they thought the session I planned would be great.

For what it's worth, it doesn't appear that App (as an institution) is pushing for any sort of AI literacy, policies, or updated guidance. The literacy push is mostly coming from the UNC system office. Kudos to you for giving students an opt-out option. There are tons of reasons why they would.

Hey #Canvas users. I want to grade each assignment on a 3-tier scale (Not Yet, Somewhat, and Yet) and provide written feedback for each assignment. When students go to see their grades, I want them to see the tier and additional feedback for each assignment. Is this possible?

I mistakenly wrote "hurricane" instead of "earthquake" in my initial post. I thought about deleting the post and writing a new one, but I decided I'll just keep it up and add this note to it as an artifact of how #Helene is still fresh on our minds here in NC.
