Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded the Special Olympics in 1968. What she started as a backyard project grew into a global phenomenon. The first Special Olympics hosted 1,000 athletes in Chicago. Today, it supports millions of athletes across >170 countries She died #OTD in 2009. #SpecialOlympics

A charming photograph of Eunice Kennedy Shriver (1921–2009), the influential founder of the Special Olympics, embracing a smiling young athlete. Shriver stands behind the youth, wrapping her arms forward in a warm, supportive gesture. Her hands rest on the athlete's shoulder, and she holds a gold medal that hangs from a ribbon around the athlete's neck. Shriver has shoulder-length brown hair, and an open, joyous smile revealing her teeth. She wears a thick navy winter jacket with a plum collar showing. The athlete, also smiling broadly toward the camera, wears a brown and white knit beanie and a green hooded sweatshirt. In the blurry background, snowy outdoor slopes and a spectator in winter ski gear indicate a Special Olympics Winter Games setting. The composition emphasizes a strong emotional bond, projecting a triumphant and heartwarming mood that highlights Shriver’s lifelong legacy of fostering inclusion and celebrating athletic achievement for people with intellectual disabilities.

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.
