What better way to get started on Bluesky than to share our new collaborative work with Thomas Griesser's lab in Leoben! Led by my friend and mentor Stefanie Müller, we used chalcones as a wavelength selective crosslinker to selectively modify material properties after printing! Check it out👇

Our latest study, led by my amazing friend and MSTP classmate Nat Skillin, is online now at Cell Biomaterials. We show that implanted LCE nanocomposites retain their ability to actuate with transcutaneous NIR light even long after the fibrous capsule forms! www.cell.com/cell-biomate...

Evergreen cartoon
A cartoon depicts a man and a woman walking side by side on a street. The woman wears a stylish dress and holds a purse, while the man is in a suit. The caption reads, "My desire to be well-informed is currently at odds with my desire to remain sane.”

This is a room where we turn very modest salaries and budgets (and lots of coffee) into new knowledge, life-saving innovations, and technology that feeds business growth. It's literally the loom that spins hay into gold but these numpties are suddenly worried about the cost of hay.
A research lab from Northwestern, chosen because it's generic and sort of zoomed out. Three scientists are visible in lab coats, and there are benches and shelving, with glass along one wall showing another high-rise building nearby. Overhead fluorescents provide light.

If it's hitting UIUC already, it's crushing other places. @econroy.bsky.social the lag will catch up real soon like.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

Direct Economic Contributions
NIH directly supports the economy through investments in research institutions and job formation.

On changes to #NIH indirect rates, there is a law in place that prohibits NIH from making such changes without the approval of Congress. See Division D, Title II Section 224 of The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Public Law No: 118-47) grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

As Jon Stewart said, “It is important in these troubled times to continue to dab on the haters” … and the haters would be loathe to see my first independent work on recyclable/degradable thermosets made from 2,3-dihydrofuran! 🌱🥽♻️

Thrilled to share our latest work in Macromolecules, a very fun collab with my (social media-less) dear friend Josh Kamps in Chris Bowman’s lab. We use DCM as a methylene source to form acetal-linked recyclable polymers and networks, including hugely scalable hydrogels. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

I'm excited to be part of the Rising Stars in Soft and Biological Matter symposium hosted by the UChicago and UCSD MRSECs. Register now to watch the talks tomorrow and Thursday! Perhaps unsurprisingly, I'll be talking about photochemistry in hydrogels. mrsec.uchicago.edu/educational-...

Delighted to share my latest work, co-first authored with fantastic undergrad mentee Joshua Lee, on highly entangled hydrogels with photolabile crosslinks. We compare selective crosslink cleavage (which lengthens chains) to non-selective photo-oxidative degradation. pubs.rsc.org/en/content/a...
