One final cleaning pass of Trench 5 before we close for the season! We will photograph and plan the #medieval features this afternoon.
A staggered line of people trowel towards themselves and work backwards across a yellowish grey trench. Behind them, masonry, wooden fencing, and ivy.

Brandon has an interesting mortar spread in his sondage chasing the sloping bedrock. This seems to be a deliberate surface on the castle-side of the #medieval midden and ditch in the SE corner.
A young man in a blue shirt and white hat brushes a mortar spread in a hole surrounded by stones. A stone-packed hole has a slightly orange mortar spread. Two legs in boots are visible at the top.

#Finds sorting with Brandon and Niall! We count and weigh all of our bulk finds, and animal bone and shell are very well represented in the assemblage! #medieval

Someone's pup 800 years ago had a little chomp! At first we were trying to determine whether it was an attempt at working, but up close all signs point to a #medieval carnivore having a nibble!

Heather excavates across the baulk between the two sondages in the #medieval ditch to determine if the platform continues in that direction.

Our third #crinoid #fossil of the season! This fossil is the stem of a sea lily; when they break apart into little discs with a hole in the middle, we call them St. Cuthbert's Beads. Check out our blog link in the next tweet...

Little signs of people's interaction with their world 700+ years ago are often more valuable than any precious metal. Someone at #medieval Bamburgh was deliberately trying to cut into the bone. It wasn't a stray knife mark from removing the meat...they made a concerted effort.
A hand holds a thin rib bone with distinct cut marks.

Minty is planning the area around the #medieval shell midden. See how she gets her line of sight right over each square? That is to make sure that any weird perspective doesn't show up in the drawing. We want a perfectly vertical view of the soil and stones!

We've found some fragments of a salt-glazed #stoneware #gingerbeer #bottle as we expanded the trench by the earlier medieval formerly-blocked entryway near St. Oswald's Gate! It was manufactured by John Mackay and Co. sometime after 1904 and would have had a brown neck and mouth.
