When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, the general consensus was that European movies often had tragic endings and were more sophisticated than Hollywood movies, with their generally happy endings. It seems to me that people now assume any tragedy is a mark of quality in storytelling.

A couple of years ago I saw a DVD case of what was clearly an adult movie stuck in a stream running through the center of a park. I thought that was a very bizarre thing for someone to do, but apparently it's common for Japan. But then, in the US people used to hide it in the woods.

Happy to see that there are at least two baby huntsman spiders stationed around the house. I see them in the same spots every night, which is reassuring. One hangs out under the (unused) light switch next to the toilet, and the other near the soap dish at the sink outside the bathroom.

Another mukade killed today. My wife explained that you have to cut them into at least three pieces and then go in to crush the head. I can't tell which end is the head, so I crushed both ends using a broken piece of granite tile. The effort required to damage these things if so freaky.
