Though it bloomed spectacularly in recent years, it had been on the decline for some time. At more than 110 years old, it far exceeded the tree's typical lifespan of 50 to 70 years. Fortunately, a new American yellowwood has been waiting in the wings in a nearby spot just south of the elder.
